What is this thing called love ( 5 saxo) 'Bird with Strings' (1949) by Charlie Parker is a unique encounter between the world of jazz and classical music. Some of today's best saxophonists return to this repertoire, with new arrangements by Christophe Del Sasso. For the young producer Norman Granz, the signing of Charlie Parker on the Mercury label was a real success story. For several years the saxophonist had been toying with the idea of seizing the opportunity to record music outside his usual quintet. The project 'Charlie Parker with strings' was therefore for him an old dream that he was to bring to reality in 1949. With an oboe, a few violins, a viola, a cello, a harp, a piano, a double bass and drums, he was to give a new sound to the 1930's classics such as 'Just Friends' or 'April in Paris'. Jazz at the Philharmonie celebrates this superb encounter by bringing together Géraldine Laurent (Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros 2015), Pierrick Pédron (Prix du disque français awarded by the Académie du jazz 2013) and Thomas de Pourquery (Artist of the Year at the Victoires du jazz 2017) on new arrangements by Christophe Dal Sasso. Recorded on January 27, 2019 at Pierre Boulez Hall, Philharmonie de Paris TV Director, Guiseppe De Vecchi

Bokanté Malika Tirolien, voice Michael League, guitar & voice Chris McQueen, guitar & voice Bob Lanzetti, guitar Roosevelt Collier, steel guitar Jamey Haddad, percussion Keita Ogawa, percussion André Ferrari, percussion An experiment conceived by Snarky Puppy founder and GroundUP Music creator Michael League (who has traded his bass in for a baritone guitar in this group), the process of formation was all but conventional. The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.' Recorded on July 20, 2018 at the Malta Jazz Festival TV Director, Amos Rozenberg

Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) Sam Harris (piano), Harish Raghavan (bass guitar), Justin Brown (drums) This young trumpet player (aged 36), an American of Nigerian heritage, has an impeccable background (from Berkeley High School to the first prize in the Thelonious Monk competition in 2007), but is much more than an impressive academic CV. He aims to create a personal world 'dedicated to beauty'. Akinmusire was born and raised in Oakland, California and first attracted the attention of the saxophonist Steve Coleman, who asked him to join Five Elements. Ambrose Akinmusire was then 19. He released his first album, 'Prelude (To Cora)', and moved to New York, where he played with Vijay Iyer, Aaron Parks, Esperanza Spalding and Jason Moran. In 2010, he worked with Terri Lyne Carrington, Ron Carter, Wallace Roney, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Everyone could see that this creative and surprising trumpet player would be a name to watch in contemporary jazz. This view was shared by the Blue Note label, who signed him up. The albums 'When the Heart Emerges Glistening' and 'The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint' were released in 2011 and 2014. The artist draws his landscapes, visions, ideas and states of mind - pure grace! Akinmusire explores the two sides of his temperament: introspection and lyrical ebullience. In summer 2017, he released 'A Rift in Decorum - Live at the Village Vanguard', a double CD recorded at the legendary club in New York, featuring 16 new compositions in two wide-ranging sets, in defiance of gravity. Recorded on July 9, at the Festival Jazz à Vienne TV Director, Fabien Raymon

Harold Lopez Nussa Trio Harold Lopez Nussa (piano) Ruy Adrian Lopez Nussa (drums) Gaston Joya (bass) Harold Lopez Nussa is a Cuban pianist who comes from a family of musicians. When you hear him it seems as if he is the custodian of all the musical traditions of the Caribbean, open to all the influences from Africa and the Americas without even mentioning the great European classical composers. It is an indication of just how much music lives within him and how he never ceases to want to share it with us. On stage, Harold Lopez overflows with expression just like everything which characterizes 'feeling' in Cuban music which is savoured with a shot of rum in the ears. Harold Lopez the direct descendent of the great Cuban pianists, Cucho Valdez, Carlos Maza, Roberto Fonseca, pianists who irresistibly make you get up off your seat and dance. Recorded on July 9, 2018 at the Jazz à Porquerolles Festival TV Director, Frank Cassenti

Lady Quartet Rhoda Scott (organ), Airelle Besson (trumpet), Lisa Cat-Berro (saxophone alto), Géraldine Laurent (saxophone alto) Sophie Alour (Saxophone tenor) Julie Saury (drums) Special guest Bernard Purdie (drums) Since 2004, the organist Rhoda Scott has been at the helm (sparked by an idea from Jazz à Vienne) of the torrid and well-named Lady Quartet, in the company of her Amazons Lisa Cat-Berro, Julie Saury and Sophie Alour. As euphoric and punchy as her young companions in the heat of the action, Rhoda Scott is one of the few still to use the pedals on her Hammond organ. Hence her nickname, 'the barefoot organist' (or 'the absolute toe' in the words of Luigi Trussardi!). After helping to raise the temperature in French jazz venues for the past 50 years, Lady Scott will be celebrating her eightieth birthday this year. She'll be blowing out the boogie candles and setting the gospel cake and soulful chorus on fire. The organist is the daughter of a travelling pastor from New Jersey and grew up in religious communities. She graduated with a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and set off for France to complete her studies with Nadia Boulanger. Back in New York, she began by playing with Count Basie. But then she decided to try her luck in Paris, where she arrived right in the month of May 1968. Featuring original compositions and covers ranging from Trenet to Wayne Shorter, 'We Free Queens' (2017), with the title proudly adapted from 'We Free Kings' by Roland Kirk, was recorded live. For Vienne a Lady All-Stars is billed, with Airelle Besson (trumpet), Géraldine Laurent (tenor saxophone) and Anne Pacéo (drums), plus the drummer Bernard Purdie. Recorded on July 3, 2018 at the Festival Jazz à Vienne TV Director, Fabien Raymond
