Lady Quartet Rhoda Scott (organ), Airelle Besson (trumpet), Lisa Cat-Berro (saxophone alto), Géraldine Laurent (saxophone alto) Sophie Alour (Saxophone tenor) Julie Saury (drums) Special guest Bernard Purdie (drums) Since 2004, the organist Rhoda Scott has been at the helm (sparked by an idea from Jazz à Vienne) of the torrid and well-named Lady Quartet, in the company of her Amazons Lisa Cat-Berro, Julie Saury and Sophie Alour. As euphoric and punchy as her young companions in the heat of the action, Rhoda Scott is one of the few still to use the pedals on her Hammond organ. Hence her nickname, 'the barefoot organist' (or 'the absolute toe' in the words of Luigi Trussardi!). After helping to raise the temperature in French jazz venues for the past 50 years, Lady Scott will be celebrating her eightieth birthday this year. She'll be blowing out the boogie candles and setting the gospel cake and soulful chorus on fire. The organist is the daughter of a travelling pastor from New Jersey and grew up in religious communities. She graduated with a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and set off for France to complete her studies with Nadia Boulanger. Back in New York, she began by playing with Count Basie. But then she decided to try her luck in Paris, where she arrived right in the month of May 1968. Featuring original compositions and covers ranging from Trenet to Wayne Shorter, 'We Free Queens' (2017), with the title proudly adapted from 'We Free Kings' by Roland Kirk, was recorded live. For Vienne a Lady All-Stars is billed, with Airelle Besson (trumpet), Géraldine Laurent (tenor saxophone) and Anne Pacéo (drums), plus the drummer Bernard Purdie. Recorded on July 3, 2018 at the Festival Jazz à Vienne TV Director, Fabien Raymond

Christian McBride's New Jawn Christian McBride,leader/bass Nasheet Waits, drums Marcus Strickland, sax tenor Josh Evans, trumpet Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, Christian McBride's path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. His latest grouping, Christian McBride's New Jawn, is a killer unit, tight, soulful, in the pocket and in the groove. By the way, Jawn is Philly slang to describe just about everything and anything, but most importantly to understand why McBride named his new band so, it is probably this: 'Jawn' is one Philly thing New York can't lay claim to'. Salif Keita Acoustic at the Carreau du Temple, Paris The 'Golden voice of Africa' was the first artist to perform at the Carreau du Temple, a 'new' Parisian venue, recently reopened after years of neglect. The inaugural concert, recorded on Friday 25 April 2014, was the perfect alliance of diverse cultures, carried by the high and powerful voice of this adoptive 'griot' - Salif Keita is a direct descendent of the Mali Empire's founder, Soundiata Keita - and a historical landmark, elegantly restored. Glass, cast iron, brick and wood have given a new life to this former market hall, whose Eiffel-style nineteenth century metallic structure is so typically Parisian. A historical venue and an artist who has freed himself from tradition and follows his own path.
