Jason Moran (piano), Tarus Mateen (bass), Nasheet Waits (drums) According to 'Rolling Stone' magazine he is the 'the most provocative thinker of the current jazz scene'. Appropriate words to describe the pianist that samples Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix and Turkish telephone calls and works closely with the Performance-Art-Icon Joan Jonas and with Ghostface Killah from Wu-Tang Clan. And so it goes further: 'Jazz Artist of the Year', 'Jazz Album of the Year', 'Pianist of the Year'. In 2011 the New York-based Jason Moran was simultaneously voted to the top of three year's best lists by the renowned 'Downbeat Magazine'. Recognition thus far for the career for the man from Houston, Texas, that - before reaching his thirtieth birthday - has gone straight to the heights of jazz culture. Moran knows the history of jazz piano; his music builds intensively upon it, however it is neither nostalgia nor copy, more a permeation of the tradition in order to create something of one's own. With him, original compositions sound just like classics that one knows, whilst he puts his own spin on standards such that one doubts whether in fact they actually come from him. It is about conviction and survival, 'of a people, a community, esthetic values, toughts and beliefs. A confrontation, a radical and deeply-rooted claim on space', says the choreographer. In Part Two, 'Avant toutes disparitions' calls on four dancers: Odile Azagury, Daniel Larrieu, Anne-Sophie Lancelin and Thomas Lebrun himself. Thomas Lebrun, 'Lied Ballet' Documentary by Jean-Marc Birrault Thomas Lebrun's creed: 'To accept dance as pleasure, entertainment, a langage, a political statement, in its narrative and abstract forms. To accept beauty, strength and frailty, passion and emotion.' His work is colourful, often with a touch of burlesque - 'Tel quel!' a piece for younger audiences is highly comical - but he is equally at ease in a more sombre and literary vein. His production of 'Death and the Maiden' in 2012 established a strong bond between dance and music. With this new work 'Lied Ballet', premiered at the 2014 Avignon Festival, he faces a new challenge, and seeks to explore the sources of inspiration shared by the 'Lied', a major musical form in the Romantic era, and ballet. Thus, nature, night, wandering and love are at the heart of this new piece for eight dancers, for whom the pleasure of dancing is not an obstacle to contemporary writing. The art of movement, its significance and poetry will be the main driving force in this ballet, with lieder by Berg, Schubert and Mahler performed live by tenor Benjamin Alunni and pianist Thomas Besnard. He interprets his own songs and now has more than half a dozen albums under his belt. Jazz Grand Prix winner of the SACEM, Richard Bona never cheats, but then, he doesn't need to. For those who may be unaware, Mike Stern is one of the greatest jazz-rock guitarists, and has been for more than twenty years now. Pupil of Pat Metheny, he was at first spotted by Billy Cobham and then by Miles Davis at the beginning of the 1980's, he was then taken on by Jaco Pastorius and an active member of 'Steps Ahead' with Danny Sanborn before starting out on a promising solo career . The drummer and percussionist Manu Katché has been for some thirty years one of the most sought after musicians at an international level on the jazz, rock and pop scenes. He became known in 1986 thanks to his participation in the album 'So' by Peter Gabriel and since then has been performing non-stop in groups or for recordings, as leader or as sideman. Hugh Masekela celebrates Mama Afrika Hugh MASEKELA flugelhorn, vocals / Cameron WARD guitar / Fana ZULU bass / Randal SKIPPERS keyboards / Lee-Roy SAULS drums / Francis Manneh FUSTER percussions With Abdullah Ibrahim, Masekela is one of the pioneering figures of South African jazz. With his music, the trumpeter, flugelhornist, singer and composer has strongly influenced the political emergence of the anti-apartheid movement which he helped bring to international attention, through noted performances such as the one he gave in Monterey alongside Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix back in 1967, or his appearance on Paul Simon's multi-million selling Graceland album. Appropriate words to describe the pianist that samples Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix and Turkish telephone calls and works closely with the Performance-Art-Icon Joan Jonas and with Ghostface Killah from Wu-Tang Clan. And so it goes further: 'Jazz Artist of the Year', 'Jazz Album of the Year', 'Pianist of the Year'. In 2011 the New York-based Jason Moran was simultaneously voted to the top of three year's best lists by the renowned 'Downbeat Magazine'. Recognition thus far for the career for the man from Houston, Texas, that - before reaching his thirtieth birthday - has gone straight to the heights of jazz culture. Moran knows the history of jazz piano; his music builds intensively upon it, however it is neither nostalgia nor copy, more a permeation of the tradition in order to create something of one's own. With him, original compositions sound just like classics that one knows, whilst he puts his own spin on standards such that one doubts whether in fact they actually come from him. The concerts of this trio are amongst the best that jazz can offer these days: the tradition at heart, the concept for tomorrow in the head and the fingers define the present.
