Taj Mahal, a formidable musician, an icon of the blues and of world music, can play over twenty instruments, including guitars and dobros, dulcimer, banjo and harmonica. A figurehead of the 'blues revival' in the mid-60's, Taj Mahal is a prolific composer, a musicologist, an indefatigable explorer of African-American, African, Caribbean, Indian and Hawaiian music. At a recording session in a studio in Georgia, Taj Mahal met griot Toumani Diabaté. Their research into the links between the blues and Mandingue music gave birth to the album 'Kulanjan' (1999). The Mandingue tradition can be heard today in the electrified and modernized ngoni of Bassekou Kouyaté. The musician from Mali is an activist for peace and tolerance in his home country. Bassekou Kouyaté invites the itinerant King of blues, Taj Mahal, for a duet: a magical moment.

He interprets his own songs and now has more than half a dozen albums under his belt. Jazz Grand Prix winner of the SACEM, Richard Bona never cheats, but then, he doesn't need to. For those who may be unaware, Mike Stern is one of the greatest jazz-rock guitarists, and has been for more than twenty years now. Pupil of Pat Metheny, he was at first spotted by Billy Cobham and then by Miles Davis at the beginning of the 1980's, he was then taken on by Jaco Pastorius and an active member of 'Steps Ahead' with Danny Sanborn before starting out on a promising solo career . The drummer and percussionist Manu Katché has been for some thirty years one of the most sought after musicians at an international level on the jazz, rock and pop scenes. He became known in 1986 thanks to his participation in the album 'So' by Peter Gabriel and since then has been performing non-stop in groups or for recordings, as leader or as sideman. QVENILD PERSONAL PIANO @ Oslo Jazz Festival 2016 Morten Qvenild, a member of In The Country, who also accompanies Susanna Wallumrød in Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, presents a very personal kind of music. Qvenild drifts away from jazz standards, presenting works performed on his 'HyPer(sonal) Piano', a keyboard augmented with electronics. The Norwegian musician's compositions are varied, and may include his own vocals. He sometimes reduces the accompaniment to a bare minimum, a few melodic touches to support the melancholy of his timbre (Wild Horses). He feels at liberty, for example, to break the continuity of a piece like Kick And Glide, speeding up the tempo and calling on programs to give his piano a psychedelic and futuristic touch - in the company of a distorted guitar - taking us far away from traditional jazz. Mike Stern (guitar) Niels Lan Doky (piano) Richard Bona (bass) Manu Katché (drums) The Cameroonian international artist Richard Bona at first became known as a bass player in the company of jazz musicians before beginning a career as a singer and composer in 1999. He interprets his own songs and now has more than half a dozen albums under his belt. Jazz Grand Prix winner of the SACEM, Richard Bona never cheats, but then, he doesn't need to. For those who may be unaware, Mike Stern is one of the greatest jazz-rock guitarists, and has been for more than twenty years now. Pupil of Pat Metheny, he was at first spotted by Billy Cobham and then by Miles Davis at the beginning of the 1980's, he was then taken on by Jaco Pastorius and an active member of 'Steps Ahead' with Danny Sanborn before starting out on a promising solo career . The drummer and percussionist Manu Katché has been for some thirty years one of the most sought after musicians at an international level on the jazz, rock and pop scenes. He became known in 1986 thanks to his participation in the album 'So' by Peter Gabriel and since then has been performing non-stop in groups or for recordings, as leader or as sideman. Jason Moran (piano), Tarus Mateen (bass), Nasheet Waits (drums) According to 'Rolling Stone' magazine he is the 'the most provocative thinker of the current jazz scene'. Appropriate words to describe the pianist that samples Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix and Turkish telephone calls and works closely with the Performance-Art-Icon Joan Jonas and with Ghostface Killah from Wu-Tang Clan. And so it goes further: 'Jazz Artist of the Year', 'Jazz Album of the Year', 'Pianist of the Year'. In 2011 the New York-based Jason Moran was simultaneously voted to the top of three year's best lists by the renowned 'Downbeat Magazine'. Recognition thus far for the career for the man from Houston, Texas, that - before reaching his thirtieth birthday - has gone straight to the heights of jazz culture. Moran knows the history of jazz piano; his music builds intensively upon it, however it is neither nostalgia nor copy, more a permeation of the tradition in order to create something of one's own. With him, original compositions sound just like classics that one knows, whilst he puts his own spin on standards such that one doubts whether in fact they actually come from him. The concerts of this trio are amongst the best that jazz can offer these days: the tradition at heart, the concept for tomorrow in the head and the fingers define the present.

OSLO JAZZ FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA @ Oslo Jazz Festival 2016 Formed especially for the thirtieth anniversary of the Oslo Jazz Festival, this super group includes established musicians and new talent representing the best of today's Norwegian jazz. On the Nasjonal Jazzscene: Mathias Eick, 37, band leader, trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist, whose compositions are inspired by North American jazz. Trygve Seim, 45, saxophonist and composer, who notably joined Manu Katché's ensemble in 2007. His influences include Jan Garbarek and Dexter Gordon. Jon Balke, 55, pianist, known for having been one of the leaders of the Oslo 13 big band in the eighties, as well as the Magnetic North Orchestra. Gard Nilssen, 33, drummer, a member of the Acoustic Unity trio. And Ellen Andreas Wang, 29, the youngest member of the group, a double-bass player and singer, and a member of experimental jazz ensemble Pixel, founded in 2011.
