A community and a vision in movement. Part One involves soloists, most of them long-time associates of Thomas Lebrun's. It is about conviction and survival, 'of a people, a community, esthetic values, toughts and beliefs. A confrontation, a radical and deeply-rooted claim on space', says the choreographer. In Part Two, 'Avant toutes disparitions' calls on four dancers: Odile Azagury, Daniel Larrieu, Anne-Sophie Lancelin and Thomas Lebrun himself. Thomas Lebrun, 'Lied Ballet' Documentary by Jean-Marc Birrault Thomas Lebrun's creed: 'To accept dance as pleasure, entertainment, a langage, a political statement, in its narrative and abstract forms. To accept beauty, strength and frailty, passion and emotion.' His work is colourful, often with a touch of burlesque - 'Tel quel!' a piece for younger audiences is highly comical - but he is equally at ease in a more sombre and literary vein. His production of 'Death and the Maiden' in 2012 established a strong bond between dance and music. With this new work 'Lied Ballet', premiered at the 2014 Avignon Festival, he faces a new challenge, and seeks to explore the sources of inspiration shared by the 'Lied', a major musical form in the Romantic era, and ballet. Thus, nature, night, wandering and love are at the heart of this new piece for eight dancers, for whom the pleasure of dancing is not an obstacle to contemporary writing. The art of movement, its significance and poetry will be the main driving force in this ballet, with lieder by Berg, Schubert and Mahler performed live by tenor Benjamin Alunni and pianist Thomas Besnard. In the 1980's the general public discovered his swing, when he played for three years alongside the legendary Miles Davis. Here, Django collaborated with Petter Eldh (bass) and Peter Bruun (drums), where they reinterpreted old Charlie Parker classics in combination with some of Bates' own compositions. QVENILD PERSONAL PIANO @ Oslo Jazz Festival 2016 Morten Qvenild, a member of In The Country, who also accompanies Susanna Wallumrød in Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, presents a very personal kind of music. Qvenild drifts away from jazz standards, presenting works performed on his 'HyPer(sonal) Piano', a keyboard augmented with electronics. The Norwegian musician's compositions are varied, and may include his own vocals. He sometimes reduces the accompaniment to a bare minimum, a few melodic touches to support the melancholy of his timbre (Wild Horses). He feels at liberty, for example, to break the continuity of a piece like Kick And Glide, speeding up the tempo and calling on programs to give his piano a psychedelic and futuristic touch - in the company of a distorted guitar - taking us far away from traditional jazz.
