It is difficult not to come across him when you like jazz and its related music : we can hear him in the Supersonic by Thomas de Pourquery, alongside Camélia Jordana with Lost, with his rock group Poni Hoax, in the electro detours Sabrina & Samantha, and even at the heart of Limousine, with whom he released an excellent recording in the spring. L'Été suivant. Laurent Bardainne comes back today with this incredibly free quartet, entitled Tigre d'Eau Douce. Music which recalls Albert Ayler's Laments and John Coltrane's freeest hours, all of which is crisscrossed by ballads and soothing moments in the colours of Soul spirituality played out on the Hammond B3 organ by Arnaud Roulin. Self-taught, it was by listening to the recordings of Art Blakey or Max Roach that he perfected his technique of drum playing, even though he was working as a technician at the National Radio of Nigeria. His destiny took a new turn when in 1964 he made the acquaintance of Fela Kuti, firstly as part of the Koola Lobitos, then as conductor of Africa 70 where he developed a new language known as the Afrobeat, a mixture of Yoruba rhythms, of funk and of revolutionary themes. With Fela Kuti, Tony would append his rhythmic signature to around twenty albums, a unique manner of drawing out the rhythms with caressing energy, but which is fantastically efficient. For the rest of his career, Tony would spend it remaining faithful to the original Afrobeat and a multidirectional emancipation leading him through jazz, Dub music and international Pop. Alternating betweed the classical trio - piano, double bass and drums - and another form comprising organ, 6-string bass and drums, his music is innovative and challenging, without ever losing touch with its audience. Jaime Woods at the International Jazz Festival of Montréal 2016 Like many before her, Jaime Woods' career began in a church. Learning and sharpening her work on the Gospel scene, in Chicago, she moved in the East Coast for a brief schooling at Berklee College. The opportunity there to explore different types of music pushed her towards New York, and in particular Brooklyn. Jaime has since been into strong collaborations with Bilal, Casey Benjamin, Gadget, Cloche Jennah, Jose James, Emily King, Nick Hakim, Roy Hargrove, Kendra Foster, Gary Bartz, Lalah Hathaway, Haitus Kaiyote... Leaning on her soul voice, upon a precise and delicate instrumentation, Jaime is undoubtedly a stand-out artist who shows, despite her 25 years, a great maturity and true sensitivity. Recorded on June 29th at the Théâtre Maisonneuve, Montréal TV direction by Mathieu Mastin
