Magic Malik Rythms and dancses from Cameroon Magic Malik, flute, voice, co-composer, co-artistic direction, Hilaire Penda co-composer, co-artistic direction, Zaf Zapha, bass, Maciek Lassere, saxophone, William Ombe, percussions, voice, Merclin Nyakam, choreography, dance, voice Created in 2017 on the occasion of the residence of Magic Malik in Royaumont, this programme focusing on Cameroon was an invitation to see much further by looking much closer. To start with, it was a question of an encounter between the flautist with large antennas and a Fulani flute played by the Burkino Faso citizen Dramane Dembelé. However, along the way, the imagined project with the late Hilaire Penda and of which the Cameroonian dancer Merlin Nyakam has become the principle mediator, feeds off traces from the past in order to question the very nature of what we call jazz and to fertilise it by projecting it into the contemporary field of a 'creolised' world'. The guest singer, Célia Kaméni, does not attempt either to compete with or to imitate, that would be impossible anyway, the first lady of song gets to grips with her world in order to sing it better. And it works perfectly, and it has to be said that the orchestra is absolutely irreproachable with its waves of intensity, its stresses, an expressive clarity which gives it a very lare range of expression. It's all there, the phrasing, the accents, the rhythm, the groove, the drive this swing, this je ne sais quoi between individual liberty and collective happiness, put simply...Jazz! João Bosco, lead, guitar/vocals Ricardo Silveira, guitar Guto Wirtti, bass Kiko Freitas, drums João Bosco has been loved in his home country of Brazil for decades, since the 60s when he first began composing and performing. In the early 90s, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US, and since then he has become increasingly popular internationally, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. Despite his growing popularity outside of his homeland, Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of never leaving it for extended periods; his music, though rooted in Brazil's classic samba and bossa nova traditions, combines rock and roll, jazz and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is. In 2017 Bosco received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Latin Recording Academy at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. His new album, Mano Que Zuera, was released at the end of the year. Recorded on July 21, 2018 at the Malta Jazz Festival TV Director, Amos Rozenberg
