Avishai Cohen @ Nancy Jazz Pulsations 2015 Avishai Cohen, double bass Omri Mor, piano Daniel Dor, drums Born in Israel and raised from an early age in the United States, Avishai Cohen is one of the most influential musicians of his generation on the international jazz scene. After 14 albums as leader, he founded his own label Razdaz Records and produced his latest opus From Darkness. Celebrated as a bass player and a composer, with this album he returns to his preferred formation: the acoustic trio. With virtuoso pianist Nitay Hershkovits and the irresistible drummer Daniel Dor, From Darkness is anything but a plunge into darkness. On the contrary, it soars and reaches the light with new creativity and expressiveness, transcended by subtle harmonic nuances. Clearly inspired, the members of the trio share their deeply-felt and communicative passion. Recorded on October 8th 2015, Poirel hall, Nancy Jazz Pulsations TV director, Sylvain Pierrel

Youn Sun Nah, Festival International de Jazz de Montréal youn Sun Nah, voice Jamie Saft, piano and keyboards Clifton Hyde, guitar TBC and acoustic bass Dan Rieser, drums YSN was born and raised in Seoul in a family captivated by the voice; her father is a choir conductor and her mother is a musical actress. The year after that, she's invited by the Korean Symphony Orchestra to sing gospels. She makes her first steps on record and on stage. Following that experience, she's noticed and hired in musicals. Her appearances are rewarded and new opportunities lead her to make choices: a career is opening to her but she's not convinced to be on the right track. She finally decides to go back to school to study music and singing. Francophile, amateur of chanson, she settles down in Paris during the fall 1995. She registers at the National Institute of Music in Beauvais, at the Conservatory of Nadia and Lili Boulanger and at the CIM, school of jazz and current music. It is in that school that the epiphany happens. During 6 full seasons, her voice and her personality have impacted and touched the hearts all over the globe. About 500 concerts between 2009 and 2015, most of them sold-out, 3 albums and 2 of them gold records in France and Germany (Same girl & Lento, ACT). Throughout this time she has received many distinctions from her peers (Académie du Jazz in France, Echo Jazz in Germany, Korean Music Award in Korea) and appeared at the 2014 Winter Olympics' closing ceremony. In May 2017, YSN release a new album: She Moves On. She'll be on tour during the whole season of 2017-2018. Recorded on 2017, June 28th at the Monument National, Montreal International Jazz Festival TV Director, Mathieu Mastin

Jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, conductor and Stanford University graduate Tom Harrell is often described as a 'pure melodic genius'. Apart from his 27 albums and hundreds of concerts as a frontman, the Illinois-born trumpeter has worked with the greatest names in jazz. He is on tour this year with an innovative sextet, 'Colors of a Dream', refining even further the 'piano-less' concept: a trumpet, two saxophones, two basses (one of them also a singer) and drums. We have Wayne Escoffery, Ugonna Okegwo and Jonathan Blake, three regular members of his quintet, and two newcomers: alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and the mesmerizing Esperanza Spalding playing bass and singing.

So it is not surprising to discover that his triple album 'The Epic' was released in 2015 on the electro and rap and instrumental label Brainfeeder. Respectful to his elders (Dolphy, Coleman, Mingus...) but free of musical clans, the powerful Californian saxophonist, a real phenomenon, assures his singularity on stage. Mixing audiences and generations around a music with an electrifying groove, he takes in all of the heritage of the Great Black Music.
