Totally fascinated, he decided to pick up the tenor saxophone. Five years later, Shepp - already a reference in the world of free jazz - recorded alongside his hero. The resulting album, 'Ascension', was released in 1966, and remains today one of the great monuments of free improvisation. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Coltrane's death - at the age of forty - the most Parisian representative of the New York avant-garde pays tribute to the brilliant composer of 'A Love Supreme', with a Franco-American all-star band not unlike that which recorded the revolutionary 'Ascension'. So he is reaching for a very high goal. The comet is coming Shabaka Hutchings, saxophone ténor Dan Leavers, synthétiseur Max Hallet, batterie Sixty years after Sun Ra released his debut album, the influence of the late avant garde jazz musician and 'cosmic philosopher' persists. Sun Ra is a clear touchstone for futurists band The Comet is coming. They're formed of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (aka King Shabaka), and the two members of Soccer96: synths guy Dan Leavers (aka Danalogue The Conqueror) and drums man Maxwell Hallett (aka Betamax Killer). Formed in 2013 after saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings spontaneously joined funk duo Soccer96 on stage, the trio combines Sun Ra's mythological themes and love of the experimental, whipping up a fusion of jazz, Afrobeat and electronica in an improvisational, intergalactic mash-upstyle, starting with an orthodox jazz sensibility and taking it to the dancefloor. For millennia, humankind has viewed comets as harbingers of doom, portents of change and destruction. Made famous by his participation in the 1960's, in the Tropicalist Movement, he was imprisoned, and forced into exile by the military regime established in 1964. Once back in Brazil, he went into politics whilst continuing his artistic career. Municipal Councilor in Salvador de Bahia he then became Minister of culture for the government of Lula da Silva. His return to Marciac where he presented his latest album marked the apotheosis of an evening entirely devoted to popular Brazilian music. A futuristic fantasy, 'Robot!', Blanca Li's new creation for the Montpellier Dance Festival, is one of these unidentified objects the choreographer from Andalusia particularly enjoys. In this approach to 'total theatre', she involves eight dancers and the animated humanoids of the Japanese collective Maywa Denki. The resulting opera takes stock of a world in which mathematics and technology try to harness human life and design thinking machines. Machines with desires... A post-dadaist choreographer, influenced by psychoanalytically-minded Martha Graham and her native city of Granada where she was a gymnast at the age of twelve, Blanca Li enjoys a comical and poetical form of humour. Bojan Z Bojan Z, piano, fender rhodes Thomas Bramerie, bass Martijn Vink, drums Pantelis Stoikos, trumpet Claudio Puntin, clarinet Paolo Fresu, trumpet Multiple prize awarded jazz pianist, Bojan Z started working with the French bassist Henri Texier, later followed by the famous clarinetist Michel Portal. With his special language consisting of a mature jazz vocabulary with subtly dosed folkloric influences from the Balkans, Bojan leaves an indelible imprint on contemporary jazz. In 2002 he receives the Prix Django Reinhardt for Musician of the Year. In 2005 he was awarded the 'European Jazz Prize' ( Hans Koller Prize) as the best European jazz artist. Bojan adds Fender Rhodes to his acoustic piano play in which be-bop lines fit in seamlessly with dance rhythms, funky backbeats and folk-tinged improvisations. For his unusual new quartet based on winds, his creation in residence, he works once again with his musician friend, the celebrated Italian trumpet player Paolo Fresu. The public will discover Pantelis Stoikos known as one of the best trumpeters of the Balkans as well as Carlo Puntin an inventive clarinetist acclaimed by John Zorn.
