'I am experiencing a historical moment, incomparable with others in my long, long life,' commented Bernstein. In a typically grandiose yet eloquent gesture, Bernstein spontaneously accepted an invitation to conduct two performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to celebrate this freedom. Two concerts, held in each section of the city that had been divided for 28 years: one in West Berlin's Philharmonie on 23 December, the other in East Berlin on 25 December 1989. It was only fitting that East Germany's new-found freedom should be celebrated with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The monumental work, perhaps the world's most famous symphony, was inspired by Schiller's poem 'Ode to Joy,' a passionate paean to freedom. For his two concerts, Bernstein substituted the word 'freedom' (Freiheit) for 'joy' (Freude) to reflect his personal message. 'I'm sure that Beethoven would have given us his blessing,' added Mr. Bernstein. This recording was taped live in East Berlin on Christmas Day 1989. Adding to the symbolism of the event, Bernstein conducted an orchestra and chorus with musicians from the United States, Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union - the four victorious World War II allies who were still responsible for governing Berlin at the time. Joining the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus were musicians from the London Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestra of Leningrad's Kirov Theater, as well as chorus members from the East-Berlin Radio Chorus and the Children's Chorus of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. Equally international were the illustrious vocalists in the movement's 'Ode to Joy,' June Anderson, Sarah Walker, Klaus König and Jan-Hendrik Rootering.

The tabla is a percussion instrument from the north of India which does indeed give rhythm to the musician's compositions as much when he is performing solo as here when he is accompanied by the bass player Dave Holland or the tenor saxophonist Chris Potter. Considered as a national treasure in India, this artist accrues performances with no less than 150 concerts per year and a career which began at 12 years of age! Perhaps the most impressive virtuoso of the tenor saxophone according to Michel Contat of Télérama, Chris Potter comes from the generation of saxophonists who came to the fore during the course of the 1990's alongside Joshua Redman, James Carter, Chris Cheek and Seamus Blake. Very quickly, this native of Chicago attracted attention because of his succulent tenor sound and a very personal manner of constructing his solos, imposing himself as a reference amongst his peers. Dave Holland's class! This majestic double bass with a round sound. A self-taught double bass player whose atypical manner of playing and magnificent sound were quickly noticed by a certain Miles Davis. A great composer as well. A French gypsy of Andalusian origin, born in Lyon (in 1963), loyal to the Aubagne region where he plays out his passion (and where he runs the Nuits Flamencas festival), the guitarist has won countless prizes and awards and is renowned in Spain and around the world. Carmona spent ten years living in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia to gain in-depth knowledge of the flamenco culture. Whilst there he performed with singers such as Agujetas and Duquende and recorded with Chano Domínguez, the Cadix pianist, among others. The Frenchman's rich array of sounds, ingenious compositions, pure instrumentals and, most importantly, his talent for improvisation in this harmonic jazz-heavy piece, makes him one of the most respected guitarists in the last 30 years. Alchemya (2013) is still a flamboyant self-portrait of a record blending flamenco with jazz fusion. With his 35 guest cadors, Juan Carmona also gives us a great lesson in the art of hospitality. The borderless musician returned from an Asian tour with Perla de Oriente in 2016 with an album recorded live in the studio. Fred Hersch Trio Fred Hersch, piano John Hébert, double-bass Eric Mc Pherson, drums A long-time sideman with Stan Getz and Lee Konitz amongst others, Fred Hersch is a pianist with a multi-faceted background. His sensitivity, impeccable technique and art of the trio, along with his interest in all strands of contemporary jazz make Fred Hersch a complete jazz pianist. Juan Carmona Septet Juan Carmona (guitar, composition) Piculabe (Voice) Noemie Humanes (Voice), Gest dancer, Paco Carmona (guitar), Domingo Patricio (flute), Kike Terron (percussions), El Bachi (bass) Juan Carmona is one of a kind in modern flamenco. A French gypsy of Andalusian origin, born in Lyon (in 1963), loyal to the Aubagne region where he plays out his passion (and where he runs the Nuits Flamencas festival), the guitarist has won countless prizes and awards and is renowned in Spain and around the world. Carmona spent ten years living in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia to gain in-depth knowledge of the flamenco culture. Whilst there he performed with singers such as Agujetas and Duquende and recorded with Chano Domínguez, the Cadix pianist, among others. The Frenchman's rich array of sounds, ingenious compositions, pure instrumentals and, most importantly, his talent for improvisation in this harmonic jazz-heavy piece, makes him one of the most respected guitarists in the last 30 years. Alchemya (2013) is still a flamboyant self-portrait of a record blending flamenco with jazz fusion. With his 35 guest cadors, Juan Carmona also gives us a great lesson in the art of hospitality. The borderless musician returned from an Asian tour with Perla de Oriente in 2016 with an album recorded live in the studio.
