Omar Sosa & Yilian Canizares Omar Sosa (piano) Yilian Cañizares (voix, violin), Gustavo Ovalles (percussions) Since leaving Cuba in 1993 and his first albums (Omar Omar and Free Roots, in 1997), Omar Sosa has been on quite a journey. The pianist's thrilling melting pot music is rooted in his Afro-Cuban background, jazz, hip hop, electro, world music and Yoruba spirituality. He formed an incredible trio with Paolo Fresu and Trilok Gurtu to visit us in 2016 for his thirtieth album (Eros). Following Transparent Water bottled with Seckou Keita's kora and the faithful Cuban percussionist Gustavo Ovalles, the Es:sensual (2018) escape with the NDR Bigband and Jacques Morelenbaum, the pianist in white is back with the singer and violinist Yilian Cañizares (born in Havana, based in Switzerland). They've just recorded Agua together, another album devoted to water and specifically Oshun, the goddess of love and spirit of rivers. Something special was sparked with Yilian who came into the public eye with two vibrant albums (Ochumare and Invocacíon). Omar Sosa: 'Agua reflects our traditions, our emotions and our nostalgia. To start with, it was a question of an encounter between the flautist with large antennas and a Fulani flute played by the Burkino Faso citizen Dramane Dembelé. However, along the way, the imagined project with the late Hilaire Penda and of which the Cameroonian dancer Merlin Nyakam has become the principle mediator, feeds off traces from the past in order to question the very nature of what we call jazz and to fertilise it by projecting it into the contemporary field of a 'creolised' world'. Self-taught, it was by listening to the recordings of Art Blakey or Max Roach that he perfected his technique of drum playing, even though he was working as a technician at the National Radio of Nigeria. His destiny took a new turn when in 1964 he made the acquaintance of Fela Kuti, firstly as part of the Koola Lobitos, then as conductor of Africa 70 where he developed a new language known as the Afrobeat, a mixture of Yoruba rhythms, of funk and of revolutionary themes. With Fela Kuti, Tony would append his rhythmic signature to around twenty albums, a unique manner of drawing out the rhythms with caressing energy, but which is fantastically efficient. For the rest of his career, Tony would spend it remaining faithful to the original Afrobeat and a multidirectional emancipation leading him through jazz, Dub music and international Pop. This innovative performance is immediately engaging and the audience is dazzled by the technical prowess of the robotic choreography. A futuristic fantasy, 'Robot!', Blanca Li's new creation for the Montpellier Dance Festival, is one of these unidentified objects the choreographer from Andalusia particularly enjoys. In this approach to 'total theatre', she involves eight dancers and the animated humanoids of the Japanese collective Maywa Denki. The resulting opera takes stock of a world in which mathematics and technology try to harness human life and design thinking machines. Machines with desires... A post-dadaist choreographer, influenced by psychoanalytically-minded Martha Graham and her native city of Granada where she was a gymnast at the age of twelve, Blanca Li enjoys a comical and poetical form of humour. Her 'Garden of Earthly Delights' after Hieronymus Bosch, premiered at Montpellier in 2009, her opera 'Rag Time' after Scott Joplin, a commercial for the Longchamp brand and a show for Jean-Paul Gaultier all partake of her invitation to 'come and dance with me'. The Minneapolis artist admits to being inspired by Marvin Gaye, the producer Flying Lotus and John Coltrane for his stylish blend of what makes up Great Black Music. Flitting between raw soul, soul folk, hip hop and jazz, James is in the microcosm of vocalists capable of keeping the crossover created by Ray Charles in the 50s alive. His first album (The Dreamer, 2008) pays tribute to Martin Luther King. The next one, Blackmagic, features the beatboxer Taylor McFerrin. His fourth album (in the meantime he recorded with Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton, Flying Lotus and the pianist Jef Neve), No Beginning No End, is on Blue Note. The more soulful than ever singer is back with Lean On Me (2018). After leaning on Billie Holiday and John Coltrane, this time he pays tribute to the living legend of American pop and the immense soulman Bill Withers. João Bosco, lead, guitar/vocals Ricardo Silveira, guitar Guto Wirtti, bass Kiko Freitas, drums João Bosco has been loved in his home country of Brazil for decades, since the 60s when he first began composing and performing. In the early 90s, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US, and since then he has become increasingly popular internationally, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. Despite his growing popularity outside of his homeland, Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of never leaving it for extended periods; his music, though rooted in Brazil's classic samba and bossa nova traditions, combines rock and roll, jazz and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is. In 2017 Bosco received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Latin Recording Academy at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. His new album, Mano Que Zuera, was released at the end of the year. Magic Malik Rythms and dancses from Cameroon Magic Malik, flute, voice, co-composer, co-artistic direction, Hilaire Penda co-composer, co-artistic direction, Zaf Zapha, bass, Maciek Lassere, saxophone, William Ombe, percussions, voice, Merclin Nyakam, choreography, dance, voice Created in 2017 on the occasion of the residence of Magic Malik in Royaumont, this programme focusing on Cameroon was an invitation to see much further by looking much closer. To start with, it was a question of an encounter between the flautist with large antennas and a Fulani flute played by the Burkino Faso citizen Dramane Dembelé. However, along the way, the imagined project with the late Hilaire Penda and of which the Cameroonian dancer Merlin Nyakam has become the principle mediator, feeds off traces from the past in order to question the very nature of what we call jazz and to fertilise it by projecting it into the contemporary field of a 'creolised' world'. Bokanté Malika Tirolien, voice Michael League, guitar & voice Chris McQueen, guitar & voice Bob Lanzetti, guitar Roosevelt Collier, steel guitar Jamey Haddad, percussion Keita Ogawa, percussion André Ferrari, percussion An experiment conceived by Snarky Puppy founder and GroundUP Music creator Michael League (who has traded his bass in for a baritone guitar in this group), the process of formation was all but conventional. The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.' Omar Sosa & Yilian Canizares Omar Sosa (piano) Yilian Cañizares (voix, violin), Gustavo Ovalles (percussions) Since leaving Cuba in 1993 and his first albums (Omar Omar and Free Roots, in 1997), Omar Sosa has been on quite a journey. The pianist's thrilling melting pot music is rooted in his Afro-Cuban background, jazz, hip hop, electro, world music and Yoruba spirituality. He formed an incredible trio with Paolo Fresu and Trilok Gurtu to visit us in 2016 for his thirtieth album (Eros). Following Transparent Water bottled with Seckou Keita's kora and the faithful Cuban percussionist Gustavo Ovalles, the Es:sensual (2018) escape with the NDR Bigband and Jacques Morelenbaum, the pianist in white is back with the singer and violinist Yilian Cañizares (born in Havana, based in Switzerland). They've just recorded Agua together, another album devoted to water and specifically Oshun, the goddess of love and spirit of rivers. Something special was sparked with Yilian who came into the public eye with two vibrant albums (Ochumare and Invocacíon). Omar Sosa: 'Agua reflects our traditions, our emotions and our nostalgia. I'm 53, Yilian is 35, and together we create meditative music that exudes modesty, peace and dignity. No gimmicks! The Minneapolis artist admits to being inspired by Marvin Gaye, the producer Flying Lotus and John Coltrane for his stylish blend of what makes up Great Black Music. Flitting between raw soul, soul folk, hip hop and jazz, James is in the microcosm of vocalists capable of keeping the crossover created by Ray Charles in the 50s alive. His first album (The Dreamer, 2008) pays tribute to Martin Luther King. The next one, Blackmagic, features the beatboxer Taylor McFerrin. His fourth album (in the meantime he recorded with Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton, Flying Lotus and the pianist Jef Neve), No Beginning No End, is on Blue Note. The more soulful than ever singer is back with Lean On Me (2018). After leaning on Billie Holiday and John Coltrane, this time he pays tribute to the living legend of American pop and the immense soulman Bill Withers. There are twelve unforgettable tracks by Withers, who celebrates his 80th birthday in July, produced by Don Was and recorded by a dream band: bassist Pino Palladino, Kris Bowers (fabulous Rhodes on the cover of Ain't No Sunshine), Brad Allen Williams and Nate Smith.
