Amaury faye Trio Amaury Faye, piano Louis Navarro, double bass Théo Lanau, percussion In keeping with the big piano trios and Big Moe Trio (in 2010), perfected from his Toulouse kingdom, the new project from Amaury Faye tells his story. He takes inspiration from artists on the contemporary New York scene and the latest trends in European jazz. Amaury Faye went to study at Berklee College in Boston with pianist Joanne Brackeen (Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon) and Tia Fuller (Joe Lovano) in 2014. The pianist is a member of the Toulouse-based Initiative H alongside his trio. Their repertoire includes original tracks and cool covers. There's a blend of improvisation and writing, virtuosity and finesse, lyricism and undulating beats (e.g. on the Fender Rhodes). Faye is one to watch on the international piano scene and famous for his talents as both a soloist and composer. Keziah Jones Keziah Jones, vocal, guitar Joel Grant, bass Joshua McKenzie, percussion Keziah Jones was born into a wealthy family in 1968 in Lagos, Nigeria. He was sent to school in England at the age of 8 and he taught himself to play the piano and guitar in London. He gradually created a stunning rhythmic blend of smooth funk, Hendrix-style psychedelia, pure Ikeja reggae and Yoruba harmonies. He called it BluFunk. Keziah Jones hung out English pubs in central London before heading to Paris where he was spotted in the underground in 1991. The album Blufunk Is a Fact and the track Rhythm is Love were international hits. After venturing through the desert of the mid-90s, he struck gold in 2003 with his fourth album Black Orpheus then the unstoppable Nigerian Wood (2008). Keziah completed an ambitious double album in 2013 flitting between Los Angeles, Spain and his kingdoms in London and Lagos. The dandy fighter is well and truly back to win over his audience. The trumpeter trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston and his warm tone and unusual round notes are instantly recognisable. After working with McCoy Tyner, Prince, Marcus Miller, Eddie Palmieri, Mos Def, Thom Yorke and Solange Knowles, the musician from Crescent City is now the pin-up boy for jazz fusion. His grandfather is the iconic Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. who managed four tribes of Black Indians (Christian actually started out in one in 1989). The Louisiana trumpeter's sound straddles hip hop, soul and jazz and he appeared a decade ago with the album Rewind That (2006). He was hit by the full force of Hurricane Katrina and devoted his next record (Anthem, 2007) to portraying the human and cultural disaster. After Live at Newport, he recorded Yesterday You Said Tomorrow in 2010 inspired by the 60s groovy jazz played by artists on the Blue Note record label. Christian Scott is one of a long line of Louisiana artists who have been reinventing jazz music for over a century. Chucho Valdés Quartet Chucho Valdés, piano Yelsy Heredia, bass Georvis Pico Milian, drums Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, percussion Chucho Valdés is a Cuban pianist, composer and arranger, a six-time Grammy Award winner and a three-time Latin Grammy Award winner, and one of the most influential Afro-Cuban musicians in history. His father, the famous Cuban pianist and bandleader Ramon 'Bebo' Valdés, was his first teacher. At the age of 3, little Chucho was already playing melodies he heard on the radio by ear with both hands in all kinds of tones. Chucho played in the famous Cuban band Irakere (1973-2005). He was also the band's founder, composer and arranger. Irakere combined traditional Afro-Cuban music, jazz, rock and classical music. Tribute to Irakere: Live at Marciac, dedicated to Irakere's 40th anniversary, won a Grammy Award as the best Latin jazz album of 2016. Chucho plays on tour and also gives music lessons. He recorded a duet with his father, Bebo, 'Juntos Para Siempre' (Grammy Award winner), and an album called Chucho's Steps, where he presented his new band, Afro-Cuban Messengers. She was born in Los Angeles and later moved to Paris. She released her first single, 'Time' (1996), at the age of 16. Her first albums brought her success and fame in France on the soul and pop scene. In addition to her career as a singer and backing vocalist, she also works as a host at Radio Nova and MTV in France. In 2008, she launched her own production company, MadeInChina Productions. In 2009, she released an album called This One's for Dinah (Blue Note France), a tribute to Dinah Washington. Her next album, Crazy Blues, was named by British newspaper The Times as one of the top 100 albums of 2013. At the end of March 2017, she released her long-awaited new album, Nightintales. China co-hosted and sang at the first UNESCO International Jazz Day in Paris, and she also often performs concerts for US UNESCO. E.J. STrickland Quintet Enoch Jamal 'E.J.' Strickland, drums Godwin Louis, alto saxophone Marcus Strickland, Saxophone Taber Gable, Piano Josh Ginsburg, Bass Over about ten years, the drummer E.J. Strickland has appeared on more than 60 albums. He has toured with Cassandra Wilson, Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, Vincent Herring, Nnenna Freelon, to mention but a few. With his twin brother, the saxophonist Marcus Strickland, co-leader of the group, he is certainly one of the most innovative entertainers of the new generation. Golden Striker Trio Ronald L. Carter (bass guitar ) Russel L. Malone (guitar) Donald Vega (piano) A hugely talented double bassist, gifted with a remarkable sense of melody and widely recognised for the finesse and elegance of his playing style, the American Ron Carter is a living legend. A musician of genius, he started out playing with Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Eric Dolphy and Bobby Timmons. He then went on to win fame alongside Cannonball Adderley and Thelonious Monk and, of course, from 1963 to 1968, in the famous quintet formed by Miles Davis. Closer to us in time, Ron Carter became a respected musical leader in his own right in the Golden Striker Trio with Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller ('Golden Striker' album, 2003) and opted, like Ray Brown towards the end of his life, for the legendary trio of piano/guitar/bass, first used by Nat King Cole and Art Tatum. This classical tradition is fully assumed by Miles' former bassist. In concert, the emotion often reaches a climax with one of his favourite songs, the standard 'My Funny Valentine'. A native of Michigan (born in 1937), Ron Carter won a Grammy Award in 1998 for the instrumental 'Call Sheet Blues' from the soundtrack of the film 'Round Midnight'. In 2010, he was made a Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters in France. Last year, his virtuoso association with the accordionist Richard Galliano enjoyed great success in France. A musical sense forged with tungsten, like the strings on his bass, and with all his elegance and freshness intact, the legend is back. Golden Striker Trio Ronald L. Carter (bass guitar ) Russel L. Malone (guitar) Donald Vega (piano) A hugely talented double bassist, gifted with a remarkable sense of melody and widely recognised for the finesse and elegance of his playing style, the American Ron Carter is a living legend. A musician of genius, he started out playing with Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Eric Dolphy and Bobby Timmons. He then went on to win fame alongside Cannonball Adderley and Thelonious Monk and, of course, from 1963 to 1968, in the famous quintet formed by Miles Davis. Closer to us in time, Ron Carter became a respected musical leader in his own right in the Golden Striker Trio with Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller ('Golden Striker' album, 2003) and opted, like Ray Brown towards the end of his life, for the legendary trio of piano/guitar/bass, first used by Nat King Cole and Art Tatum. This classical tradition is fully assumed by Miles' former bassist. In concert, the emotion often reaches a climax with one of his favourite songs, the standard 'My Funny Valentine'. A native of Michigan (born in 1937), Ron Carter won a Grammy Award in 1998 for the instrumental 'Call Sheet Blues' from the soundtrack of the film 'Round Midnight'. In 2010, he was made a Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters in France. Last year, his virtuoso association with the accordionist Richard Galliano enjoyed great success in France. A musical sense forged with tungsten, like the strings on his bass, and with all his elegance and freshness intact, the legend is back. An Evening with Avishai Cohen INSO-Lviv Orchestra Christian Schumann, Conductor Avishai Cohen , Double bass and vocals Omri Mor, Piano Noam David, Percussion Avishai Cohen is an Israeli jazz bassist, double bass player, composer and arranger who gained fame when he became a member of Chick Corea's band Origin. He has also performed with such stars as Daniel Perez, Bobby McFerrin, Jeff 'Tain' Watts, Jeff Ballard, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Paquito D'Rivera and many others. Avishai has recorded 15 albums. Chick Corea considers him 'a genius musician', and Bass Player magazine named him one of the 100 most influential bassists of the 20th century. Moreover, Avishai is also an amazing singer. With support from the Embassy of Israel to Ukraine, Avishai will perform together with the INSO-Lviv Academic Symphony Orchestra. The artistic director of the orchestra, which was founded in 1998, is a People's Artist of Ukraine, legendary composer Myroslav Skoryk. The orchestra has won several awards, including a Radio Swiss Classic Love Award, a Golden Disc from Franz Xaver Mozart Klavierkonzerte and others. The performance with Avishai will be a new jazz experience for INSO-Lviv, following the orchestra's collaboration with composer and pianist Vadim Neselovskyi. As euphoric and punchy as her young companions in the heat of the action, Rhoda Scott is one of the few still to use the pedals on her Hammond organ. Hence her nickname, 'the barefoot organist' (or 'the absolute toe' in the words of Luigi Trussardi!). After helping to raise the temperature in French jazz venues for the past 50 years, Lady Scott will be celebrating her eightieth birthday this year. She'll be blowing out the boogie candles and setting the gospel cake and soulful chorus on fire. The organist is the daughter of a travelling pastor from New Jersey and grew up in religious communities. She graduated with a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and set off for France to complete her studies with Nadia Boulanger. Back in New York, she began by playing with Count Basie. But then she decided to try her luck in Paris, where she arrived right in the month of May 1968. Featuring original compositions and covers ranging from Trenet to Wayne Shorter, 'We Free Queens' (2017), with the title proudly adapted from 'We Free Kings' by Roland Kirk, was recorded live. For Vienne a Lady All-Stars is billed, with Airelle Besson (trumpet), Géraldine Laurent (tenor saxophone) and Anne Pacéo (drums), plus the drummer Bernard Purdie. Chucho Valdés Quartet Chucho Valdés, piano Yelsy Heredia, bass Georvis Pico Milian, drums Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, percussion Chucho Valdés is a Cuban pianist, composer and arranger, a six-time Grammy Award winner and a three-time Latin Grammy Award winner, and one of the most influential Afro-Cuban musicians in history. His father, the famous Cuban pianist and bandleader Ramon 'Bebo' Valdés, was his first teacher. At the age of 3, little Chucho was already playing melodies he heard on the radio by ear with both hands in all kinds of tones. Chucho played in the famous Cuban band Irakere (1973-2005). He was also the band's founder, composer and arranger. Irakere combined traditional Afro-Cuban music, jazz, rock and classical music. Tribute to Irakere: Live at Marciac, dedicated to Irakere's 40th anniversary, won a Grammy Award as the best Latin jazz album of 2016. Chucho plays on tour and also gives music lessons. He recorded a duet with his father, Bebo, 'Juntos Para Siempre' (Grammy Award winner), and an album called Chucho's Steps, where he presented his new band, Afro-Cuban Messengers.
