MEZZO

The musical rendezvous of Malian vocalist Fatoumata Diawara and the Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca is a unique genre-bending collaboration. Diawara, 32, combines his native country's musical tradition and pop influences with remarkable ease. Fonseca, a Buena Vista Social club collaborator, treks the various paths suggested by the rich musical tradition of Africa and Cuba, always adding something contemporary to the mix.

Troyka Chris Montague - guitar, loop Joshua Blackmore - drums Kit Downes - organ Troyka are rooted in the jazz tradition and are at the same time hiply contemporary. Atmospheres often change in a single piece, almost to the point of paradox: hard and aggressive guitar riffs mix with gentle keyboard motifs, while composition and improvisation combine as one. New Orleans, Street Jazz & Dirty Rap Documentary by Samuel Petit New Orleans is like no other city in the United States. Proud of its French past, its heart beats to the rhythm of jazz - the city even gave its name to a specific style of jazz. Director Samuel Petit follows Rusty Lazer, a DJ and producer of 'bounce music' - a local style of hip hop -, members of the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Trombone Shorty, a musician who has become a symbol of the city's new musical tradition. Meeting the saxophonist Javier Zalba from the band Irakere inspired Fonseca to explore alternative music such as Keith Jarrett or Herbie Hancock and traditional beats. He began blending vibrant Cuban rhythms with Santeria's African roots, classical music and jazz ('Yo', 2012). Roberto Fonseca is now seen as an icon of Latin jazz and a potential heir to Chucho Valdes. After a poignant duet with the Mali singer Fatoumata Diawara (2014), the pianist is back with Eliades Ochoa, one of the latest figures in the Buena Vista Social Club and the best-known Cuban vocalist on the scene. He interprets his own songs and now has more than half a dozen albums under his belt. Jazz Grand Prix winner of the SACEM, Richard Bona never cheats, but then, he doesn't need to. For those who may be unaware, Mike Stern is one of the greatest jazz-rock guitarists, and has been for more than twenty years now. Pupil of Pat Metheny, he was at first spotted by Billy Cobham and then by Miles Davis at the beginning of the 1980's, he was then taken on by Jaco Pastorius and an active member of 'Steps Ahead' with Danny Sanborn before starting out on a promising solo career . The drummer and percussionist Manu Katché has been for some thirty years one of the most sought after musicians at an international level on the jazz, rock and pop scenes. He became known in 1986 thanks to his participation in the album 'So' by Peter Gabriel and since then has been performing non-stop in groups or for recordings, as leader or as sideman. A French gypsy of Andalusian origin, born in Lyon (in 1963), loyal to the Aubagne region where he plays out his passion (and where he runs the Nuits Flamencas festival), the guitarist has won countless prizes and awards and is renowned in Spain and around the world. Carmona spent ten years living in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia to gain in-depth knowledge of the flamenco culture. Whilst there he performed with singers such as Agujetas and Duquende and recorded with Chano Domínguez, the Cadix pianist, among others. The Frenchman's rich array of sounds, ingenious compositions, pure instrumentals and, most importantly, his talent for improvisation in this harmonic jazz-heavy piece, makes him one of the most respected guitarists in the last 30 years. Alchemya (2013) is still a flamboyant self-portrait of a record blending flamenco with jazz fusion. With his 35 guest cadors, Juan Carmona also gives us a great lesson in the art of hospitality. Zakir Hussain (tabla) Chris Potter (saxophone) Dave Holland (double bass) The Indian composer and percussionist Zakir Hussain is THE tabla player of his generation. The tabla is a percussion instrument from the north of India which does indeed give rhythm to the musician's compositions as much when he is performing solo as here when he is accompanied by the bass player Dave Holland or the tenor saxophonist Chris Potter. Considered as a national treasure in India, this artist accrues performances with no less than 150 concerts per year and a career which began at 12 years of age! Perhaps the most impressive virtuoso of the tenor saxophone according to Michel Contat of Télérama, Chris Potter comes from the generation of saxophonists who came to the fore during the course of the 1990's alongside Joshua Redman, James Carter, Chris Cheek and Seamus Blake. Very quickly, this native of Chicago attracted attention because of his succulent tenor sound and a very personal manner of constructing his solos, imposing himself as a reference amongst his peers. Dave Holland's class! This majestic double bass with a round sound. A self-taught double bass player whose atypical manner of playing and magnificent sound were quickly noticed by a certain Miles Davis. A great composer as well. The bizarre society was founded in the 19th century in Great Britain and it still believes that pictures taken from space are false. The eponymous 1998 Big Band from Belgium, however, plays anything but flat music. The claim to fame came for this jazz orchestra, founded by artist and clarinettist Peter Vermeersch in 2004, as he and pianist Uri Caine went on tour. In 2006 they released their first CD, 'Psychoscout', followed by their second CD, 'Clear Me, Perverts!' in 2009. A rebel and anti-conformist ensemble with a lot to offer, from faithful adherence to music rules to intoxicating improvisation.

At the age of nineteen, Shai Maestro began his career with Avishai Cohen as an accompanist. After a few years performing all around the world, the time for independence came in 2011. John Scofield began playing the guitar as a teenager, discovered the standards of jazz before being drawn to jazz-rock and studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In the 1970's, his career started as a side man with trumpeter and singer Chet Baker and pianist George Duke, among others. In the 1980's the general public discovered his swing, when he played for three years alongside the legendary Miles Davis. Later, Sco's brand of jazz fusion absorbed elements of soul and of the 'New Orleans Spirit', as he played with the greatest musicians of his generation, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Jim Hall.
