Sun Ra is a clear touchstone for futurists band The Comet is coming. They're formed of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (aka King Shabaka), and the two members of Soccer96: synths guy Dan Leavers (aka Danalogue The Conqueror) and drums man Maxwell Hallett (aka Betamax Killer). Formed in 2013 after saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings spontaneously joined funk duo Soccer96 on stage, the trio combines Sun Ra's mythological themes and love of the experimental, whipping up a fusion of jazz, Afrobeat and electronica in an improvisational, intergalactic mash-upstyle, starting with an orthodox jazz sensibility and taking it to the dancefloor. For millennia, humankind has viewed comets as harbingers of doom, portents of change and destruction. Arthur Possing Quartet Pierre Cocq-Amann, saxophones Arthur Possing, piano, compositions Sebastian 'Schlapbe' Flach, double bass Pit Huberty, drums Arthur Possing is a young Luxembourgish pianist, born in 1996 into a family in which music has always played a significant role. He started classical percussion at the age of 6 and classical piano at the age of 10, later in the class of well-known pianist Jean Muller. In 2009, he began studying jazz piano with Marc Mangen and vibraphone in 2011 with Guy Cabay. In 2016, he began further studies in jazz piano at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles with Eric Legnini. The Arthur Possing Quartet was originally formed in 2013. Its members met in high school and soon started playing together regularly. Since 2017, the musicians are originally from Germany, France and Luxembourg and have studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood near Paris and the Musikhochschule Mannheim. Their repertoire consists both of own compositions and tunes of appreciated jazzmen. In 2017, the quartet released their first album 'Four Years', which was released in March'18 on the Belgian label Hypnote Records. The tabla is a percussion instrument from the north of India which does indeed give rhythm to the musician's compositions as much when he is performing solo as here when he is accompanied by the bass player Dave Holland or the tenor saxophonist Chris Potter. Considered as a national treasure in India, this artist accrues performances with no less than 150 concerts per year and a career which began at 12 years of age! Perhaps the most impressive virtuoso of the tenor saxophone according to Michel Contat of Télérama, Chris Potter comes from the generation of saxophonists who came to the fore during the course of the 1990's alongside Joshua Redman, James Carter, Chris Cheek and Seamus Blake. Very quickly, this native of Chicago attracted attention because of his succulent tenor sound and a very personal manner of constructing his solos, imposing himself as a reference amongst his peers. The piano and percussion maestro (he started out as a drummer) studied music for a long time in Havana. Meeting the saxophonist Javier Zalba from the band Irakere inspired Fonseca to explore alternative music such as Keith Jarrett or Herbie Hancock and traditional beats. He began blending vibrant Cuban rhythms with Santeria's African roots, classical music and jazz ('Yo', 2012). Roberto Fonseca is now seen as an icon of Latin jazz and a potential heir to Chucho Valdes. To round off the year, he whipped up the crowds last year with Robert Glasper and a real Who's Who in contemporary US jazz (see line-up) in the supergroup concept named R+R=Now. He has developed a distinctive sound that draws upon rock, funk and jazz as well as traditional Algerian, Indian and Vietnamese styles. His ethereal and colourful music acts like a powerful detonator which every time creates new and unheard soundscapes. On his latest album he teams up with young traditionalist singer Ngo Hong Quang, on lute, Vietnamese fiddle, Jew's harp, to portray 'the soul of Vietnam' and its quickening evolution. Sun Ra is a clear touchstone for futurists band The Comet is coming. They're formed of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (aka King Shabaka), and the two members of Soccer96: synths guy Dan Leavers (aka Danalogue The Conqueror) and drums man Maxwell Hallett (aka Betamax Killer). Formed in 2013 after saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings spontaneously joined funk duo Soccer96 on stage, the trio combines Sun Ra's mythological themes and love of the experimental, whipping up a fusion of jazz, Afrobeat and electronica in an improvisational, intergalactic mash-upstyle, starting with an orthodox jazz sensibility and taking it to the dancefloor.
