The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.' With his special language consisting of a mature jazz vocabulary with subtly dosed folkloric influences from the Balkans, Bojan leaves an indelible imprint on contemporary jazz. In 2002 he receives the Prix Django Reinhardt for Musician of the Year. In 2005 he was awarded the 'European Jazz Prize' ( Hans Koller Prize) as the best European jazz artist. Bojan adds Fender Rhodes to his acoustic piano play in which be-bop lines fit in seamlessly with dance rhythms, funky backbeats and folk-tinged improvisations. For his unusual new quartet based on winds, his creation in residence, he works once again with his musician friend, the celebrated Italian trumpet player Paolo Fresu. Made famous by his participation in the 1960's, in the Tropicalist Movement, he was imprisoned, and forced into exile by the military regime established in 1964. Once back in Brazil, he went into politics whilst continuing his artistic career. Municipal Councilor in Salvador de Bahia he then became Minister of culture for the government of Lula da Silva. His return to Marciac where he presented his latest album marked the apotheosis of an evening entirely devoted to popular Brazilian music. From muted sambas to classy bossas, they are part of popular Brazilian music that the musician in his seventies has always stood up for. At the age of only 30 years, the Lithuanian was unanimously selected by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) to be their musical director; succeeding Andris Nelsons and Sir Simon Rattle. Sun Ra is a clear touchstone for futurists band The Comet is coming. They're formed of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (aka King Shabaka), and the two members of Soccer96: synths guy Dan Leavers (aka Danalogue The Conqueror) and drums man Maxwell Hallett (aka Betamax Killer). Being a female conductor means being an exception. Even today. When a woman stands on the podium she is, in most cases, somehow 'the first': the first to lead a world-class orchestra, the first to conduct the 'Last Night of the Proms' in London, the first to win the German Conductor Prize. But it seems that the world of the maestro is now in a state of upheaval. The young Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, who took over the post of Andris Nelsons in Birmingham, said with conviction: 'I really believe that something is changing now.' But why is it that there have been so few female conductors in the international music scene? To take a closer look at this phenomenon, the film MAESTRAS follows several female conductors at Lucerne Festival 2016, which with the motto 'PrimaDonna' dedicated itself to this theme. Through the rehearsals, concerts and talks with participants of various professions at the Lucerne Festival the film approaches this subject. Along with the female musicians of the festival, the life of the former conductor Sylvia Caduff is followed. The Swiss woman was the first female assistant to Leonard Bernstein and directed the Berlin Philharmonic in 1978 when she filled in for Herbert von Karajan.

It is difficult not to come across him when you like jazz and its related music : we can hear him in the Supersonic by Thomas de Pourquery, alongside Camélia Jordana with Lost, with his rock group Poni Hoax, in the electro detours Sabrina & Samantha, and even at the heart of Limousine, with whom he released an excellent recording in the spring. L'Été suivant. Laurent Bardainne comes back today with this incredibly free quartet, entitled Tigre d'Eau Douce. Music which recalls Albert Ayler's Laments and John Coltrane's freeest hours, all of which is crisscrossed by ballads and soothing moments in the colours of Soul spirituality played out on the Hammond B3 organ by Arnaud Roulin.
