Robot ! This innovative performance is immediately engaging and the audience is dazzled by the technical prowess of the robotic choreography. A futuristic fantasy, 'Robot!', Blanca Li's new creation for the Montpellier Dance Festival, is one of these unidentified objects the choreographer from Andalusia particularly enjoys. In this approach to 'total theatre', she involves eight dancers and the animated humanoids of the Japanese collective Maywa Denki. The resulting opera takes stock of a world in which mathematics and technology try to harness human life and design thinking machines. Machines with desires... A post-dadaist choreographer, influenced by psychoanalytically-minded Martha Graham and her native city of Granada where she was a gymnast at the age of twelve, Blanca Li enjoys a comical and poetical form of humour. Her 'Garden of Earthly Delights' after Hieronymus Bosch, premiered at Montpellier in 2009, her opera 'Rag Time' after Scott Joplin, a commercial for the Longchamp brand and a show for Jean-Paul Gaultier all partake of her invitation to 'come and dance with me'. In the early 90s, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US, and since then he has become increasingly popular internationally, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. Despite his growing popularity outside of his homeland, Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of never leaving it for extended periods; his music, though rooted in Brazil's classic samba and bossa nova traditions, combines rock and roll, jazz and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is. In 2017 Bosco received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Latin Recording Academy at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. His new album, Mano Que Zuera, was released at the end of the year. The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.' A Slender figure, straight hair with a white beard, Erik Truffaz has marked the history of European jazz with at least two albums: The Dawn and Bending New Corners. Hip-hop, jungle rhythms and a timbre similar to that of Miles Davis: a cocktail that you just can't get enough of. The Swiss trumpet player, who has often taken an interest in non-western music, is making a comeback today - after a series of more pop style records with various singers including Sophie Hunger - this time with a new recording which is looking towards Africa: Doni Doni. Clearly in love with women's voices, he has invited Malian singer Rokia Traoré into the studio, who will of course be there for this stylistically very open-minded evening. The Minneapolis artist admits to being inspired by Marvin Gaye, the producer Flying Lotus and John Coltrane for his stylish blend of what makes up Great Black Music. Flitting between raw soul, soul folk, hip hop and jazz, James is in the microcosm of vocalists capable of keeping the crossover created by Ray Charles in the 50s alive. His first album (The Dreamer, 2008) pays tribute to Martin Luther King. The next one, Blackmagic, features the beatboxer Taylor McFerrin. His fourth album (in the meantime he recorded with Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton, Flying Lotus and the pianist Jef Neve), No Beginning No End, is on Blue Note. The more soulful than ever singer is back with Lean On Me (2018). After leaning on Billie Holiday and John Coltrane, this time he pays tribute to the living legend of American pop and the immense soulman Bill Withers. A Slender figure, straight hair with a white beard, Erik Truffaz has marked the history of European jazz with at least two albums: The Dawn and Bending New Corners. Hip-hop, jungle rhythms and a timbre similar to that of Miles Davis: a cocktail that you just can't get enough of. The Swiss trumpet player, who has often taken an interest in non-western music, is making a comeback today - after a series of more pop style records with various singers including Sophie Hunger - this time with a new recording which is looking towards Africa: Doni Doni. Bokanté Malika Tirolien, voice Michael League, guitar & voice Chris McQueen, guitar & voice Bob Lanzetti, guitar Roosevelt Collier, steel guitar Jamey Haddad, percussion Keita Ogawa, percussion André Ferrari, percussion An experiment conceived by Snarky Puppy founder and GroundUP Music creator Michael League (who has traded his bass in for a baritone guitar in this group), the process of formation was all but conventional. The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.'
