Arthur Possing Quartet Pierre Cocq-Amann, saxophones Arthur Possing, piano, compositions Sebastian 'Schlapbe' Flach, double bass Pit Huberty, drums Arthur Possing is a young Luxembourgish pianist, born in 1996 into a family in which music has always played a significant role. He started classical percussion at the age of 6 and classical piano at the age of 10, later in the class of well-known pianist Jean Muller. In 2009, he began studying jazz piano with Marc Mangen and vibraphone in 2011 with Guy Cabay. In 2016, he began further studies in jazz piano at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles with Eric Legnini. The Arthur Possing Quartet was originally formed in 2013. Its members met in high school and soon started playing together regularly. Since 2017, the musicians are originally from Germany, France and Luxembourg and have studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood near Paris and the Musikhochschule Mannheim. Their repertoire consists both of own compositions and tunes of appreciated jazzmen. In 2017, the quartet released their first album 'Four Years', which was released in March'18 on the Belgian label Hypnote Records. Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) Sam Harris (piano), Harish Raghavan (bass guitar), Justin Brown (drums) This young trumpet player (aged 36), an American of Nigerian heritage, has an impeccable background (from Berkeley High School to the first prize in the Thelonious Monk competition in 2007), but is much more than an impressive academic CV. He aims to create a personal world 'dedicated to beauty'. Akinmusire was born and raised in Oakland, California and first attracted the attention of the saxophonist Steve Coleman, who asked him to join Five Elements. Ambrose Akinmusire was then 19. He released his first album, 'Prelude (To Cora)', and moved to New York, where he played with Vijay Iyer, Aaron Parks, Esperanza Spalding and Jason Moran. In 2010, he worked with Terri Lyne Carrington, Ron Carter, Wallace Roney, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Everyone could see that this creative and surprising trumpet player would be a name to watch in contemporary jazz. This view was shared by the Blue Note label, who signed him up. The albums 'When the Heart Emerges Glistening' and 'The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint' were released in 2011 and 2014. The artist draws his landscapes, visions, ideas and states of mind - pure grace! Akinmusire explores the two sides of his temperament: introspection and lyrical ebullience. In summer 2017, he released 'A Rift in Decorum - Live at the Village Vanguard', a double CD recorded at the legendary club in New York, featuring 16 new compositions in two wide-ranging sets, in defiance of gravity. Golden Striker Trio Ronald L. Carter (bass guitar ) Russel L. Malone (guitar) Donald Vega (piano) A hugely talented double bassist, gifted with a remarkable sense of melody and widely recognised for the finesse and elegance of his playing style, the American Ron Carter is a living legend. A musician of genius, he started out playing with Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Eric Dolphy and Bobby Timmons. He then went on to win fame alongside Cannonball Adderley and Thelonious Monk and, of course, from 1963 to 1968, in the famous quintet formed by Miles Davis. Closer to us in time, Ron Carter became a respected musical leader in his own right in the Golden Striker Trio with Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller ('Golden Striker' album, 2003) and opted, like Ray Brown towards the end of his life, for the legendary trio of piano/guitar/bass, first used by Nat King Cole and Art Tatum. This classical tradition is fully assumed by Miles' former bassist. In concert, the emotion often reaches a climax with one of his favourite songs, the standard 'My Funny Valentine'. A native of Michigan (born in 1937), Ron Carter won a Grammy Award in 1998 for the instrumental 'Call Sheet Blues' from the soundtrack of the film 'Round Midnight'. In 2010, he was made a Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters in France. Last year, his virtuoso association with the accordionist Richard Galliano enjoyed great success in France. A musical sense forged with tungsten, like the strings on his bass, and with all his elegance and freshness intact, the legend is back. Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah Christian Scott, trumpet, Reverse Flugel, Sirenette Lawrence Fields, piano and keyboard Max Moran (b) Mike Mitchell, percussion Elena Pinderhughes, flute Weedie Braimah, drums 27 year old Christian Scott embodies the new generation of New Orleans trumpeters, a seminal dynasty that started with the legendary King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and continued with Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton. The trumpeter trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston and his warm tone and unusual round notes are instantly recognisable. After working with McCoy Tyner, Prince, Marcus Miller, Eddie Palmieri, Mos Def, Thom Yorke and Solange Knowles, the musician from Crescent City is now the pin-up boy for jazz fusion. His grandfather is the iconic Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. who managed four tribes of Black Indians (Christian actually started out in one in 1989). The Louisiana trumpeter's sound straddles hip hop, soul and jazz and he appeared a decade ago with the album Rewind That (2006). He was hit by the full force of Hurricane Katrina and devoted his next record (Anthem, 2007) to portraying the human and cultural disaster. China Moses China Moses, vocals Luigi Grasso, saxophone, keyboard Joe Armon Jones, piano Neil Charles, bass Marijus Aleksa, drums China Moses is an outstanding American vocalist and the daughter of the famous jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater (the headliner at the fourth Alfa Jazz Fest) and Gilbert Moses. She was born in Los Angeles and later moved to Paris. She released her first single, 'Time' (1996), at the age of 16. Her first albums brought her success and fame in France on the soul and pop scene. In addition to her career as a singer and backing vocalist, she also works as a host at Radio Nova and MTV in France. In 2008, she launched her own production company, MadeInChina Productions. In 2009, she released an album called This One's for Dinah (Blue Note France), a tribute to Dinah Washington. Her next album, Crazy Blues, was named by British newspaper The Times as one of the top 100 albums of 2013. At the end of March 2017, she released her long-awaited new album, Nightintales. China co-hosted and sang at the first UNESCO International Jazz Day in Paris, and she also often performs concerts for US UNESCO. Donny McCaslin Donny McCaslin, saphoxone according to the album 'Beyond Now' Donny McCaslin is a tenor sax player. Influenced by his father, pianist and vibraphonist, he starts playing saxophone at the age of 12. After stopping by Berklee College of Music of Boston, he joins a quintet of a teacher from his school, Gary Burton, with whom he will tour for a few years. He moves to New York in 1991 and joins the band Steps Ahead. He will play with several more important music ensembles such as the Ken Schaphorst's big band or the Maria Schneider Ahead. In 2005, he joins trumpeter Dave Douglas'quintet. In 2010, he explores for the first time electric, funk, R&B and soul music. Moreover, David Bowie chose Mc Caslin's band to support his very last album Blackstar. In the past years, he was three times nominated for Grammys Awards. Keziah Jones Keziah Jones, vocal, guitar Joel Grant, bass Joshua McKenzie, percussion Keziah Jones was born into a wealthy family in 1968 in Lagos, Nigeria. He was sent to school in England at the age of 8 and he taught himself to play the piano and guitar in London. He gradually created a stunning rhythmic blend of smooth funk, Hendrix-style psychedelia, pure Ikeja reggae and Yoruba harmonies. He called it BluFunk. Keziah Jones hung out English pubs in central London before heading to Paris where he was spotted in the underground in 1991. The album Blufunk Is a Fact and the track Rhythm is Love were international hits. After venturing through the desert of the mid-90s, he struck gold in 2003 with his fourth album Black Orpheus then the unstoppable Nigerian Wood (2008). Keziah completed an ambitious double album in 2013 flitting between Los Angeles, Spain and his kingdoms in London and Lagos. The dandy fighter is well and truly back to win over his audience. Chucho Valdés Quartet Chucho Valdés, piano Yelsy Heredia, bass Georvis Pico Milian, drums Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, percussion Chucho Valdés is a Cuban pianist, composer and arranger, a six-time Grammy Award winner and a three-time Latin Grammy Award winner, and one of the most influential Afro-Cuban musicians in history. His father, the famous Cuban pianist and bandleader Ramon 'Bebo' Valdés, was his first teacher. At the age of 3, little Chucho was already playing melodies he heard on the radio by ear with both hands in all kinds of tones. Chucho played in the famous Cuban band Irakere (1973-2005). He was also the band's founder, composer and arranger. Irakere combined traditional Afro-Cuban music, jazz, rock and classical music. Tribute to Irakere: Live at Marciac, dedicated to Irakere's 40th anniversary, won a Grammy Award as the best Latin jazz album of 2016. Chucho plays on tour and also gives music lessons. He recorded a duet with his father, Bebo, 'Juntos Para Siempre' (Grammy Award winner), and an album called Chucho's Steps, where he presented his new band, Afro-Cuban Messengers. China Moses China Moses, vocals Luigi Grasso, saxophone, keyboard Joe Armon Jones, piano Neil Charles, bass Marijus Aleksa, drums China Moses is an outstanding American vocalist and the daughter of the famous jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater (the headliner at the fourth Alfa Jazz Fest) and Gilbert Moses. She was born in Los Angeles and later moved to Paris. She released her first single, 'Time' (1996), at the age of 16. Her first albums brought her success and fame in France on the soul and pop scene. In addition to her career as a singer and backing vocalist, she also works as a host at Radio Nova and MTV in France. In 2008, she launched her own production company, MadeInChina Productions. In 2009, she released an album called This One's for Dinah (Blue Note France), a tribute to Dinah Washington. Her next album, Crazy Blues, was named by British newspaper The Times as one of the top 100 albums of 2013. At the end of March 2017, she released her long-awaited new album, Nightintales. China co-hosted and sang at the first UNESCO International Jazz Day in Paris, and she also often performs concerts for US UNESCO. An Evening with Avishai Cohen INSO-Lviv Orchestra Christian Schumann, Conductor Avishai Cohen , Double bass and vocals Omri Mor, Piano Noam David, Percussion Avishai Cohen is an Israeli jazz bassist, double bass player, composer and arranger who gained fame when he became a member of Chick Corea's band Origin. He has also performed with such stars as Daniel Perez, Bobby McFerrin, Jeff 'Tain' Watts, Jeff Ballard, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Paquito D'Rivera and many others. Avishai has recorded 15 albums. Chick Corea considers him 'a genius musician', and Bass Player magazine named him one of the 100 most influential bassists of the 20th century. Moreover, Avishai is also an amazing singer. With support from the Embassy of Israel to Ukraine, Avishai will perform together with the INSO-Lviv Academic Symphony Orchestra. The artistic director of the orchestra, which was founded in 1998, is a People's Artist of Ukraine, legendary composer Myroslav Skoryk. The orchestra has won several awards, including a Radio Swiss Classic Love Award, a Golden Disc from Franz Xaver Mozart Klavierkonzerte and others. The performance with Avishai will be a new jazz experience for INSO-Lviv, following the orchestra's collaboration with composer and pianist Vadim Neselovskyi. The trumpeter trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston and his warm tone and unusual round notes are instantly recognisable. After working with McCoy Tyner, Prince, Marcus Miller, Eddie Palmieri, Mos Def, Thom Yorke and Solange Knowles, the musician from Crescent City is now the pin-up boy for jazz fusion. His grandfather is the iconic Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. who managed four tribes of Black Indians (Christian actually started out in one in 1989). The Louisiana trumpeter's sound straddles hip hop, soul and jazz and he appeared a decade ago with the album Rewind That (2006). He was hit by the full force of Hurricane Katrina and devoted his next record (Anthem, 2007) to portraying the human and cultural disaster.
