Gregory Porter at the International Jazz Festival of Montréal 2016 Gregory Porter's musical awakening came upon hearing his mother's Nat King Cole records as a child - Porter would later write a show in homage to the singer. After seeing his dreams of professional football thwarted by a major injury, the California-born artist turned to music. With the help of his mentor, the multi-instrumentalist and composer Kamau Kenyatta, Porter honed his skills in San Diego jazz clubs before landing a role in the musical It Ain't Nothing But the Blues. His resume also includes a collaboration with famed flutist Hubert Laws. A gifted songwriter, he penned most of the jazz and soul-oriented material appearing on his first albums, Water (2010), Be Good (2012) and Liquid Spirit (2013), winner of a Grammy for Best jazz vocal album. Some of today's best saxophonists return to this repertoire, with new arrangements by Christophe Del Sasso. For the young producer Norman Granz, the signing of Charlie Parker on the Mercury label was a real success story. For several years the saxophonist had been toying with the idea of seizing the opportunity to record music outside his usual quintet. The project 'Charlie Parker with strings' was therefore for him an old dream that he was to bring to reality in 1949. With an oboe, a few violins, a viola, a cello, a harp, a piano, a double bass and drums, he was to give a new sound to the 1930's classics such as 'Just Friends' or 'April in Paris'. Jazz at the Philharmonie celebrates this superb encounter by bringing together Géraldine Laurent (Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros 2015), Pierrick Pédron (Prix du disque français awarded by the Académie du jazz 2013) and Thomas de Pourquery (Artist of the Year at the Victoires du jazz 2017) on new arrangements by Christophe Dal Sasso. Danilo Perez, john Patitucci, Brian Blade Trio 'Children of the light' Danilo Pérez, piano John Patitucci, double bass Brian Blade, drums What a trio! These musicians have been the heart of the Wayne Shorter Quartet's formidable rhythm section for the past fifteen years: Danilo Pérez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums. Each is of course a true master in his own right. And their reunion is an amazing gift to jazz lovers. The stylistic unity and level of communication never fail to impress. The three musicians know each other perfectly, as is apparent throughout the album, with a unique sense of narration. Pérez has rarely played so well, while Patitucci and Blade constantly experiment and innovate. Some of their compositions/improvisations can be very dense melodically and harmonically, but they also enjoy the beauty of a simple melody. A treat! The bizarre society was founded in the 19th century in Great Britain and it still believes that pictures taken from space are false. The eponymous 1998 Big Band from Belgium, however, plays anything but flat music. The claim to fame came for this jazz orchestra, founded by artist and clarinettist Peter Vermeersch in 2004, as he and pianist Uri Caine went on tour. In 2006 they released their first CD, 'Psychoscout', followed by their second CD, 'Clear Me, Perverts!' in 2009. A rebel and anti-conformist ensemble with a lot to offer, from faithful adherence to music rules to intoxicating improvisation.

So he is reaching for a very high goal. And you can bet that the challenge will be met with brio, because the young American is one of the most talented pianists of his generation : protégé of the immense late Billy Taylor, taken on by Christian McBride at 20, recognised by Wynton Marsalis who saw in him one of the grate heirs of the tradition, Christian Sands does actually possess an instrumental language which alludes to the whole history of his instrument, but still succeeds in remaining extremely modern. In 1991 he founded a quartet which today is composed of Benoît Corboz (keyboards), Marcello Giuliani (bass) and Marc Erbetta (drums and percussion),he explores electronic jazz-fusion much in the same way as Miles Davis and recorded several albums starting from 1994. After an incursion into into rock at the head of his Ladybird Quartet created in 2001, he returned to the formula which had made him successful. In his world, always deeply influenced by Miles Davis, the stridencies of rock alternate with the poetic respites, the rousing grooves with more calm ballads. Pura Fé's music is a happy mix of Blues, traditional Indian music and Folk Song. Her moving voice conveys an ancestral message from the Native American world and tells how history unites southern Native and African-Americans. Mathis Haugs's contemporary folk-blues brings to mind Ben Harper and Moriarty. But comparisons are irrelevant, as Mathis has developed his own musical world. This project draws its inspiration from the comic album 'Rouge Camargue' by Jean Vilaine and Michel Faure. Gregory Porter at the International Jazz Festival of Montréal 2016 Gregory Porter's musical awakening came upon hearing his mother's Nat King Cole records as a child - Porter would later write a show in homage to the singer. After seeing his dreams of professional football thwarted by a major injury, the California-born artist turned to music. With the help of his mentor, the multi-instrumentalist and composer Kamau Kenyatta, Porter honed his skills in San Diego jazz clubs before landing a role in the musical It Ain't Nothing But the Blues. His resume also includes a collaboration with famed flutist Hubert Laws. A gifted songwriter, he penned most of the jazz and soul-oriented material appearing on his first albums, Water (2010), Be Good (2012) and Liquid Spirit (2013), winner of a Grammy for Best jazz vocal album. It is difficult not to come across him when you like jazz and its related music : we can hear him in the Supersonic by Thomas de Pourquery, alongside Camélia Jordana with Lost, with his rock group Poni Hoax, in the electro detours Sabrina & Samantha, and even at the heart of Limousine, with whom he released an excellent recording in the spring. L'Été suivant. Laurent Bardainne comes back today with this incredibly free quartet, entitled Tigre d'Eau Douce. Music which recalls Albert Ayler's Laments and John Coltrane's freeest hours, all of which is crisscrossed by ballads and soothing moments in the colours of Soul spirituality played out on the Hammond B3 organ by Arnaud Roulin.
