Self-taught, it was by listening to the recordings of Art Blakey or Max Roach that he perfected his technique of drum playing, even though he was working as a technician at the National Radio of Nigeria. His destiny took a new turn when in 1964 he made the acquaintance of Fela Kuti, firstly as part of the Koola Lobitos, then as conductor of Africa 70 where he developed a new language known as the Afrobeat, a mixture of Yoruba rhythms, of funk and of revolutionary themes. With Fela Kuti, Tony would append his rhythmic signature to around twenty albums, a unique manner of drawing out the rhythms with caressing energy, but which is fantastically efficient. For the rest of his career, Tony would spend it remaining faithful to the original Afrobeat and a multidirectional emancipation leading him through jazz, Dub music and international Pop. After soul sister Macy Gray, with whom he recorded an album, the ever-inventive saxophonist brings us a brand new body of work inspired by the slam poetry of Saul Williams. A great choice: over the past fifteen years, the star of the independent film 'Slam' has been standing out among rappers and slam poets with the quality of his writing and the intensity of his performances. His punch lines make him a unique performer - a remarkable poet with a powerful rap-soul voice. In David Murray, who previously worked with writers Amiri Baraka and Ishmael Reed, Williams has found an ideal partner. A match made in heaven.

Troyka Chris Montague - guitar, loop Joshua Blackmore - drums Kit Downes - organ Troyka are rooted in the jazz tradition and are at the same time hiply contemporary. Atmospheres often change in a single piece, almost to the point of paradox: hard and aggressive guitar riffs mix with gentle keyboard motifs, while composition and improvisation combine as one. This blend of garage rock, jazz improvisations and dance music defies labelling: the band sound like 'King Crimson for the iPod generation,' as the London listings magazine 'Time Out' put it. One thing is for sure: this trio forms part of a generation of young musicians who reject the limits of genre, with the decisive question no longer 'What is it?' but 'Is it good?'.

In 1991 he founded a quartet which today is composed of Benoît Corboz (keyboards), Marcello Giuliani (bass) and Marc Erbetta (drums and percussion),he explores electronic jazz-fusion much in the same way as Miles Davis and recorded several albums starting from 1994. After an incursion into into rock at the head of his Ladybird Quartet created in 2001, he returned to the formula which had made him successful. In his world, always deeply influenced by Miles Davis, the stridencies of rock alternate with the poetic respites, the rousing grooves with more calm ballads. Pura Fé's music is a happy mix of Blues, traditional Indian music and Folk Song. Her moving voice conveys an ancestral message from the Native American world and tells how history unites southern Native and African-Americans. Mathis Haugs's contemporary folk-blues brings to mind Ben Harper and Moriarty. But comparisons are irrelevant, as Mathis has developed his own musical world. This project draws its inspiration from the comic album 'Rouge Camargue' by Jean Vilaine and Michel Faure.
