Éric Legnini Trio Éric Legnini Trio Eric Legnini (piano) Rocky Gresset (guitar) Thomas Bramerie (double bass) A foot-stomping jazz, touched by soul and by funk. Eric Legnini's recording tryptich, begun in 2006 with Miss Soul (then Big Boogaloo and Trippin'), marking the magnificent first steps of a leader for a pianist with a hyper-sophisticated bop language as early as the middle of the 1990's alongside the saxophonist Stefano Di Battista. Since then, the Belgian musician, settled in Paris has led an eclectic career, multiplied collaborations with vocalists (his friend Huge Coltman amngst others) and regularly puts on his producer's hat. In this 2019 season, Eric Legnini is coming back to the trio, but this time without drums : he will be accompanied by the guitarist Rocky Gresset (a reference on the Gypsy jazz scene) and by Thomas Bramerie (long-time touring partner and very probably the most sought after Parisian bass player) with whom he will present a completely new repertoire. What is this thing called love ( 5 saxo) 'Bird with Strings' (1949) by Charlie Parker is a unique encounter between the world of jazz and classical music. Some of today's best saxophonists return to this repertoire, with new arrangements by Christophe Del Sasso. For the young producer Norman Granz, the signing of Charlie Parker on the Mercury label was a real success story. For several years the saxophonist had been toying with the idea of seizing the opportunity to record music outside his usual quintet. The project 'Charlie Parker with strings' was therefore for him an old dream that he was to bring to reality in 1949. With an oboe, a few violins, a viola, a cello, a harp, a piano, a double bass and drums, he was to give a new sound to the 1930's classics such as 'Just Friends' or 'April in Paris'. Gregory Porter at the International Jazz Festival of Montréal 2016 Gregory Porter's musical awakening came upon hearing his mother's Nat King Cole records as a child - Porter would later write a show in homage to the singer. After seeing his dreams of professional football thwarted by a major injury, the California-born artist turned to music. With the help of his mentor, the multi-instrumentalist and composer Kamau Kenyatta, Porter honed his skills in San Diego jazz clubs before landing a role in the musical It Ain't Nothing But the Blues. His resume also includes a collaboration with famed flutist Hubert Laws. A gifted songwriter, he penned most of the jazz and soul-oriented material appearing on his first albums, Water (2010), Be Good (2012) and Liquid Spirit (2013), winner of a Grammy for Best jazz vocal album. In 1991 he founded a quartet which today is composed of Benoît Corboz (keyboards), Marcello Giuliani (bass) and Marc Erbetta (drums and percussion),he explores electronic jazz-fusion much in the same way as Miles Davis and recorded several albums starting from 1994. After an incursion into into rock at the head of his Ladybird Quartet created in 2001, he returned to the formula which had made him successful. In his world, always deeply influenced by Miles Davis, the stridencies of rock alternate with the poetic respites, the rousing grooves with more calm ballads. So he is reaching for a very high goal. And you can bet that the challenge will be met with brio, because the young American is one of the most talented pianists of his generation : protégé of the immense late Billy Taylor, taken on by Christian McBride at 20, recognised by Wynton Marsalis who saw in him one of the grate heirs of the tradition, Christian Sands does actually possess an instrumental language which alludes to the whole history of his instrument, but still succeeds in remaining extremely modern. Self-taught, it was by listening to the recordings of Art Blakey or Max Roach that he perfected his technique of drum playing, even though he was working as a technician at the National Radio of Nigeria. His destiny took a new turn when in 1964 he made the acquaintance of Fela Kuti, firstly as part of the Koola Lobitos, then as conductor of Africa 70 where he developed a new language known as the Afrobeat, a mixture of Yoruba rhythms, of funk and of revolutionary themes. With Fela Kuti, Tony would append his rhythmic signature to around twenty albums, a unique manner of drawing out the rhythms with caressing energy, but which is fantastically efficient. For the rest of his career, Tony would spend it remaining faithful to the original Afrobeat and a multidirectional emancipation leading him through jazz, Dub music and international Pop.
