The Minneapolis artist admits to being inspired by Marvin Gaye, the producer Flying Lotus and John Coltrane for his stylish blend of what makes up Great Black Music. Flitting between raw soul, soul folk, hip hop and jazz, James is in the microcosm of vocalists capable of keeping the crossover created by Ray Charles in the 50s alive. His first album (The Dreamer, 2008) pays tribute to Martin Luther King. The next one, Blackmagic, features the beatboxer Taylor McFerrin. His fourth album (in the meantime he recorded with Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton, Flying Lotus and the pianist Jef Neve), No Beginning No End, is on Blue Note. The more soulful than ever singer is back with Lean On Me (2018). After leaning on Billie Holiday and John Coltrane, this time he pays tribute to the living legend of American pop and the immense soulman Bill Withers. Omar Sosa & Yilian Canizares Omar Sosa (piano) Yilian Cañizares (voix, violin), Gustavo Ovalles (percussions) Since leaving Cuba in 1993 and his first albums (Omar Omar and Free Roots, in 1997), Omar Sosa has been on quite a journey. The pianist's thrilling melting pot music is rooted in his Afro-Cuban background, jazz, hip hop, electro, world music and Yoruba spirituality. He formed an incredible trio with Paolo Fresu and Trilok Gurtu to visit us in 2016 for his thirtieth album (Eros). Following Transparent Water bottled with Seckou Keita's kora and the faithful Cuban percussionist Gustavo Ovalles, the Es:sensual (2018) escape with the NDR Bigband and Jacques Morelenbaum, the pianist in white is back with the singer and violinist Yilian Cañizares (born in Havana, based in Switzerland). They've just recorded Agua together, another album devoted to water and specifically Oshun, the goddess of love and spirit of rivers. Something special was sparked with Yilian who came into the public eye with two vibrant albums (Ochumare and Invocacíon). Omar Sosa: 'Agua reflects our traditions, our emotions and our nostalgia. A French gypsy of Andalusian origin, born in Lyon (in 1963), loyal to the Aubagne region where he plays out his passion (and where he runs the Nuits Flamencas festival), the guitarist has won countless prizes and awards and is renowned in Spain and around the world. Carmona spent ten years living in Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia to gain in-depth knowledge of the flamenco culture. Whilst there he performed with singers such as Agujetas and Duquende and recorded with Chano Domínguez, the Cadix pianist, among others. The Frenchman's rich array of sounds, ingenious compositions, pure instrumentals and, most importantly, his talent for improvisation in this harmonic jazz-heavy piece, makes him one of the most respected guitarists in the last 30 years. Alchemya (2013) is still a flamboyant self-portrait of a record blending flamenco with jazz fusion. With his 35 guest cadors, Juan Carmona also gives us a great lesson in the art of hospitality. The borderless musician returned from an Asian tour with Perla de Oriente in 2016 with an album recorded live in the studio. Sun Ra is a clear touchstone for futurists band The Comet is coming. They're formed of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (aka King Shabaka), and the two members of Soccer96: synths guy Dan Leavers (aka Danalogue The Conqueror) and drums man Maxwell Hallett (aka Betamax Killer). Formed in 2013 after saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings spontaneously joined funk duo Soccer96 on stage, the trio combines Sun Ra's mythological themes and love of the experimental, whipping up a fusion of jazz, Afrobeat and electronica in an improvisational, intergalactic mash-upstyle, starting with an orthodox jazz sensibility and taking it to the dancefloor. For millennia, humankind has viewed comets as harbingers of doom, portents of change and destruction. Arthur Possing Quartet Pierre Cocq-Amann, saxophones Arthur Possing, piano, compositions Sebastian 'Schlapbe' Flach, double bass Pit Huberty, drums Arthur Possing is a young Luxembourgish pianist, born in 1996 into a family in which music has always played a significant role. He started classical percussion at the age of 6 and classical piano at the age of 10, later in the class of well-known pianist Jean Muller. In 2009, he began studying jazz piano with Marc Mangen and vibraphone in 2011 with Guy Cabay. In 2016, he began further studies in jazz piano at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles with Eric Legnini. The Arthur Possing Quartet was originally formed in 2013. Its members met in high school and soon started playing together regularly. Since 2017, the musicians are originally from Germany, France and Luxembourg and have studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood near Paris and the Musikhochschule Mannheim. Their repertoire consists both of own compositions and tunes of appreciated jazzmen. In 2017, the quartet released their first album 'Four Years', which was released in March'18 on the Belgian label Hypnote Records.
