The comet is coming Shabaka Hutchings, saxophone ténor Dan Leavers, synthétiseur Max Hallet, batterie Sixty years after Sun Ra released his debut album, the influence of the late avant garde jazz musician and 'cosmic philosopher' persists. Sun Ra is a clear touchstone for futurists band The Comet is coming. They're formed of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (aka King Shabaka), and the two members of Soccer96: synths guy Dan Leavers (aka Danalogue The Conqueror) and drums man Maxwell Hallett (aka Betamax Killer). Formed in 2013 after saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings spontaneously joined funk duo Soccer96 on stage, the trio combines Sun Ra's mythological themes and love of the experimental, whipping up a fusion of jazz, Afrobeat and electronica in an improvisational, intergalactic mash-upstyle, starting with an orthodox jazz sensibility and taking it to the dancefloor. For millennia, humankind has viewed comets as harbingers of doom, portents of change and destruction. To start with, it was a question of an encounter between the flautist with large antennas and a Fulani flute played by the Burkino Faso citizen Dramane Dembelé. However, along the way, the imagined project with the late Hilaire Penda and of which the Cameroonian dancer Merlin Nyakam has become the principle mediator, feeds off traces from the past in order to question the very nature of what we call jazz and to fertilise it by projecting it into the contemporary field of a 'creolised' world'. Arthur Possing Quartet Pierre Cocq-Amann, saxophones Arthur Possing, piano, compositions Sebastian 'Schlapbe' Flach, double bass Pit Huberty, drums Arthur Possing is a young Luxembourgish pianist, born in 1996 into a family in which music has always played a significant role. He started classical percussion at the age of 6 and classical piano at the age of 10, later in the class of well-known pianist Jean Muller. In 2009, he began studying jazz piano with Marc Mangen and vibraphone in 2011 with Guy Cabay. In 2016, he began further studies in jazz piano at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles with Eric Legnini. The Arthur Possing Quartet was originally formed in 2013. Its members met in high school and soon started playing together regularly. Since 2017, the musicians are originally from Germany, France and Luxembourg and have studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood near Paris and the Musikhochschule Mannheim. Their repertoire consists both of own compositions and tunes of appreciated jazzmen. In 2017, the quartet released their first album 'Four Years', which was released in March'18 on the Belgian label Hypnote Records. Alonzo King is a great admirer of classical ballet, in which he sees a wonderful science of movement. To this virtuoso technique, he brings a physical, muscular sensuality, an almost feline fluidity refined to the point of pure esthetic pleasure. Meyer, his last creation, was premiered on the 30th anniversary of the company. Written in collaboration with American composer and bass player Edgar Meyer, the music brings purpose and rhythm to bodies and movement. Writing Ground draws its inspiration from the words of writer Colum McCann. In this piece, Alonzo King explores the wealth of traditional music from the Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Tibetan traditions. His choreography becomes a language, at once poetic and electrifying. Throughout his extensive career, he has played alongside notable musicians such as Lee Konitz, Richard Galliano, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Dave Douglas, Geri Allen, Miroslav Vitous, Philip Caterine, Tomasz Stanko, Michel Petrucciani, John Abercrombie, Joe Lovano... Rava was famously inclined to work with young musicians too. Giovanni Guidi is a revered pianist among the young Italian generation of jazz musicians. He won Top Jazz 2007 as best new national talent. Gianluca Petrella is hailed as one of the most significant jazz trombonists in the world. Gabriele Evangelista is a praised Italian bass player with extraordinary precise skills combined with wild creativity and distinctive interplay. Extended Hanoi Duo Nguyên Lê, electric and accoustic guitar Ngo Hong Quang, traditional instruments, voice Mieko Miyazaki, koto Paolo Fresu, trumpet Edouard Prabhu, tabals Alex Tran, percussions Hao Nhiem Pham, flute The celebrated French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê is a masterful, inventive player who has cultivated a wholly unique voice on the instrument, ranking right up there with Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Mike Stern and Allan Holdsworth in the post-Hendrix world of jazz guitar. He has developed a distinctive sound that draws upon rock, funk and jazz as well as traditional Algerian, Indian and Vietnamese styles. His ethereal and colourful music acts like a powerful detonator which every time creates new and unheard soundscapes. On his latest album he teams up with young traditionalist singer Ngo Hong Quang, on lute, Vietnamese fiddle, Jew's harp, to portray 'the soul of Vietnam' and its quickening evolution. There are jaunty folkish tunes, temple bells and ethereal melodies, and a storm of electric guitars. Nguyên's life-long friend, the famous Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu adds elegant Miles Davis-like peaks to a powerful, fauvism-coloured fusion of ancient and modern.
