The Sound of New York, Vicente Archer 'The Sound of New York' is the exploration of the musical world of a new generation of artists based in New York City. These musicians hail from different countries, with their own stories and diverse experiences, are giving birth to a new musical wave that takes shape influencing worldwide the artistic scene. It's right in New York today that this impulse is stronger than ever: the sounds come from a deep integration of music of the past and today, interacting with other artistic forms. It's a modern concentration of African-American music influences, including classical and contemporary, as well as more mainstream styles such as Jazz, Hip-Hop, R'B, Rock, etc 10 musicians internationally known will lead us into this world walking along the streets of New York. We will see the places where they live and listen to the music they compose to know their artistic essence. Vicente Archer is an american bassist. Born and raised in Woodstock, NY, Vicente Archer has been hailed as one of the most sought-out bassists of his generation. At the age of twenty, while still in college in Boston, he was picked up by acclaimed artists Donald Harrison and Eric Reed to tour. Soon after that he went on to work with artists such as Terence Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Wynton Marsalis, Stanley Jordan, Stefon Harris and many more. We will see the places where they live and listen to the music they compose to know their artistic essence. Mark Turner is an American jazz saxophonist. He played the clarinet, followed by the alto and tenor saxophones in high school. In 1990 he moves to New York and worked at Tower Records in New York City for an extended period before working full-time as a jazz musician. Turner's sound is reminiscent of that of Warne Marsh, but he also has elements of John Coltrane in his playing. His improvised lines tend to span several octaves and contain great harmonic and rhythmic complexity. His compositions often make use of repeated patterns, odd-metered time signatures, and intervallic leaps. Turner claims that his music is 'unfolding like a narrative'. In September 2014, Turner released his first album as a leader since 2001 on ECM Records; it features trumpeter Avishai Cohen, bassist Joe Martin, and drummer Marcus Gilmore. An Evening with Avishai Cohen INSO-Lviv Orchestra Christian Schumann, Conductor Avishai Cohen , Double bass and vocals Omri Mor, Piano Noam David, Percussion Avishai Cohen is an Israeli jazz bassist, double bass player, composer and arranger who gained fame when he became a member of Chick Corea's band Origin. He has also performed with such stars as Daniel Perez, Bobby McFerrin, Jeff 'Tain' Watts, Jeff Ballard, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Paquito D'Rivera and many others. Avishai has recorded 15 albums. Chick Corea considers him 'a genius musician', and Bass Player magazine named him one of the 100 most influential bassists of the 20th century. Moreover, Avishai is also an amazing singer. With support from the Embassy of Israel to Ukraine, Avishai will perform together with the INSO-Lviv Academic Symphony Orchestra. The artistic director of the orchestra, which was founded in 1998, is a People's Artist of Ukraine, legendary composer Myroslav Skoryk. The orchestra has won several awards, including a Radio Swiss Classic Love Award, a Golden Disc from Franz Xaver Mozart Klavierkonzerte and others. The performance with Avishai will be a new jazz experience for INSO-Lviv, following the orchestra's collaboration with composer and pianist Vadim Neselovskyi. Critics have praised his 'controlled fury' and 'microscopically complex beats.' Born in West Covina, California, he studied with drummer Billy Higgins. Reid was a 1998 recipient of NEC's Alan Dawson Scholarship and in 1999 was accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California. Reid has also attended The New School in New York City. He has performed with Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard, Robert Glasper, Cassandra Wilson, Bruce Hornsby, Jacky Terrasson, Ravi Coltrane, Angélique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves, Mark Turner ... and many others. The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.' Chucho Valdés Quartet Chucho Valdés, piano Yelsy Heredia, bass Georvis Pico Milian, drums Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, percussion Chucho Valdés is a Cuban pianist, composer and arranger, a six-time Grammy Award winner and a three-time Latin Grammy Award winner, and one of the most influential Afro-Cuban musicians in history. His father, the famous Cuban pianist and bandleader Ramon 'Bebo' Valdés, was his first teacher. At the age of 3, little Chucho was already playing melodies he heard on the radio by ear with both hands in all kinds of tones. Chucho played in the famous Cuban band Irakere (1973-2005). He was also the band's founder, composer and arranger. Irakere combined traditional Afro-Cuban music, jazz, rock and classical music. Tribute to Irakere: Live at Marciac, dedicated to Irakere's 40th anniversary, won a Grammy Award as the best Latin jazz album of 2016. Chucho plays on tour and also gives music lessons. He recorded a duet with his father, Bebo, 'Juntos Para Siempre' (Grammy Award winner), and an album called Chucho's Steps, where he presented his new band, Afro-Cuban Messengers. Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) Sam Harris (piano), Harish Raghavan (bass guitar), Justin Brown (drums) This young trumpet player (aged 36), an American of Nigerian heritage, has an impeccable background (from Berkeley High School to the first prize in the Thelonious Monk competition in 2007), but is much more than an impressive academic CV. He aims to create a personal world 'dedicated to beauty'. Akinmusire was born and raised in Oakland, California and first attracted the attention of the saxophonist Steve Coleman, who asked him to join Five Elements. Ambrose Akinmusire was then 19. He released his first album, 'Prelude (To Cora)', and moved to New York, where he played with Vijay Iyer, Aaron Parks, Esperanza Spalding and Jason Moran. In 2010, he worked with Terri Lyne Carrington, Ron Carter, Wallace Roney, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Everyone could see that this creative and surprising trumpet player would be a name to watch in contemporary jazz. This view was shared by the Blue Note label, who signed him up. The albums 'When the Heart Emerges Glistening' and 'The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint' were released in 2011 and 2014. The artist draws his landscapes, visions, ideas and states of mind - pure grace! Akinmusire explores the two sides of his temperament: introspection and lyrical ebullience. NORMA WINSTONE TRIO & EMILY REMEMBERED LIVE AT THE EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL Since emerging on the London jazz scene in 1966 with an engagement at Ronnie Scott's Club, Norma Winstone has worked with many of the innovators on the British and European scene. Her unique voice could be said to define an entire era of British and European Jazz, from re-inventions of The Great American Songbook to more abstract excursions into vocal timbre. She recorded five albums for the iconic German record label ECM with the group Azimuth, with John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler. Her own album for ECM, Somewhere Called Home with John Taylor and saxophonist/clarinettist Tony Coe, has become a classic vocal album, and her latest album Dance without Answer was released on ECM in 2013.
