Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) Sam Harris (piano), Harish Raghavan (bass guitar), Justin Brown (drums) This young trumpet player (aged 36), an American of Nigerian heritage, has an impeccable background (from Berkeley High School to the first prize in the Thelonious Monk competition in 2007), but is much more than an impressive academic CV. He aims to create a personal world 'dedicated to beauty'. Akinmusire was born and raised in Oakland, California and first attracted the attention of the saxophonist Steve Coleman, who asked him to join Five Elements. Ambrose Akinmusire was then 19. He released his first album, 'Prelude (To Cora)', and moved to New York, where he played with Vijay Iyer, Aaron Parks, Esperanza Spalding and Jason Moran. In 2010, he worked with Terri Lyne Carrington, Ron Carter, Wallace Roney, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Everyone could see that this creative and surprising trumpet player would be a name to watch in contemporary jazz. This view was shared by the Blue Note label, who signed him up. The albums 'When the Heart Emerges Glistening' and 'The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint' were released in 2011 and 2014. The artist draws his landscapes, visions, ideas and states of mind - pure grace! Akinmusire explores the two sides of his temperament: introspection and lyrical ebullience. In summer 2017, he released 'A Rift in Decorum - Live at the Village Vanguard', a double CD recorded at the legendary club in New York, featuring 16 new compositions in two wide-ranging sets, in defiance of gravity. Lady Quartet Rhoda Scott (organ), Airelle Besson (trumpet), Lisa Cat-Berro (saxophone alto), Géraldine Laurent (saxophone alto) Sophie Alour (Saxophone tenor) Julie Saury (drums) Special guest Bernard Purdie (drums) Since 2004, the organist Rhoda Scott has been at the helm (sparked by an idea from Jazz à Vienne) of the torrid and well-named Lady Quartet, in the company of her Amazons Lisa Cat-Berro, Julie Saury and Sophie Alour. As euphoric and punchy as her young companions in the heat of the action, Rhoda Scott is one of the few still to use the pedals on her Hammond organ. Hence her nickname, 'the barefoot organist' (or 'the absolute toe' in the words of Luigi Trussardi!). After helping to raise the temperature in French jazz venues for the past 50 years, Lady Scott will be celebrating her eightieth birthday this year. She'll be blowing out the boogie candles and setting the gospel cake and soulful chorus on fire. The organist is the daughter of a travelling pastor from New Jersey and grew up in religious communities. She graduated with a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and set off for France to complete her studies with Nadia Boulanger. Back in New York, she began by playing with Count Basie. But then she decided to try her luck in Paris, where she arrived right in the month of May 1968. Featuring original compositions and covers ranging from Trenet to Wayne Shorter, 'We Free Queens' (2017), with the title proudly adapted from 'We Free Kings' by Roland Kirk, was recorded live. For Vienne a Lady All-Stars is billed, with Airelle Besson (trumpet), Géraldine Laurent (tenor saxophone) and Anne Pacéo (drums), plus the drummer Bernard Purdie. The Sound of New York, Damion Reid 'The Sound of New York' is the exploration of the musical world of a new generation of artists based in New York City. These musicians hail from different countries, with their own stories and diverse experiences, are giving birth to a new musical wave that takes shape influencing worldwide the artistic scene. It's right in New York today that this impulse is stronger than ever: the sounds come from a deep integration of music of the past and today, interacting with other artistic forms. It's a modern concentration of African-American music influences, including classical and contemporary, as well as more mainstream styles such as Jazz, Hip-Hop, R'B, Rock, etc 10 musicians internationally known will lead us into this world walking along the streets of New York. We will see the places where they live and listen to the music they compose to know their artistic essence. Damion Reid is an American drummer. Critics have praised his 'controlled fury' and 'microscopically complex beats.' Born in West Covina, California, he studied with drummer Billy Higgins. Reid was a 1998 recipient of NEC's Alan Dawson Scholarship and in 1999 was accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California. Reid has also attended The New School in New York City. He has performed with Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard, Robert Glasper, Cassandra Wilson, Bruce Hornsby, Jacky Terrasson, Ravi Coltrane, Angélique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves, Mark Turner ... and many others. Reid currently performs with Steve Coleman and the Five Elements, Greg Ward's Phonic Juggernaut, the Steve Lehman Trio, various projects led by guitarist Miles Okazaki, Rudresh Mahanthappa and Bunky Green's APEX and the Steve Lehman-Rudresh Mahanthappa co-led project Dual Identity. Steve Lehman Trio Described as 'one of the transforming figures of early 21st century jazz,' by The Guardian (UK) and as a 'dazzling saxophonist,' by The New York Times, Steve Lehman (b. New York City, 1978) is a composer, performer, educator, and scholar who works across a broad spectrum of jazz-based musical idioms. His recent recording, Travail, Transformation & Flow (Pi 2009), was chosen as the #1 Jazz Album of the year by The New York Times. For this evening's performance, Lehman will perform with his critically-acclaimed trio, featuring Matt Brewer (Bass) and Damion Reid (Drum Set). The trio's most recent recording, Dialect Fluorescent (Pi, 2012) was called one of the Top 10 recordings of 2012 by over thirty publications internationally, including Spin, The Denver Post, and the Village Voice

João Bosco, lead, guitar/vocals Ricardo Silveira, guitar Guto Wirtti, bass Kiko Freitas, drums João Bosco has been loved in his home country of Brazil for decades, since the 60s when he first began composing and performing. In the early 90s, Bosco mounted a major tour of the US, and since then he has become increasingly popular internationally, regularly performing at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. Despite his growing popularity outside of his homeland, Bosco remains thoroughly attached to Brazil to the point of never leaving it for extended periods; his music, though rooted in Brazil's classic samba and bossa nova traditions, combines rock and roll, jazz and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as inventive and challenging as he is. In 2017 Bosco received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Latin Recording Academy at the 18th Annual Latin Grammy Awards. His new album, Mano Que Zuera, was released at the end of the year. Born and raised in Woodstock, NY, Vicente Archer has been hailed as one of the most sought-out bassists of his generation. Soon after that he went on to work with artists such as Terence Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Wynton Marsalis, Stanley Jordan, Stefon Harris and many more. Paco de Lucia , Light & Shade Documentary by Michael Meert Paco de Lucia appeared like a comet on the international scene. His guitar-playing was of a type never before heard-flamenco, yes, but with something quite new. Flamenco music, it roots shrouded in mystery, is certainly integral to his style. Listening to him, though, you can soon hear that he is trying to break several stylistic barriers. The film should not only introduce the star everyone reckons they are familiar with from concerts or recording-the self-assured, grandiose performer, but Paco's readiness to allow a highly personal film portrait of himself means that we can gain a background glimpse into the personality of this fascinating musician. NORMA WINSTONE TRIO & EMILY REMEMBERED LIVE AT THE EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL Since emerging on the London jazz scene in 1966 with an engagement at Ronnie Scott's Club, Norma Winstone has worked with many of the innovators on the British and European scene. Her unique voice could be said to define an entire era of British and European Jazz, from re-inventions of The Great American Songbook to more abstract excursions into vocal timbre. She recorded five albums for the iconic German record label ECM with the group Azimuth, with John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler. Her own album for ECM, Somewhere Called Home with John Taylor and saxophonist/clarinettist Tony Coe, has become a classic vocal album, and her latest album Dance without Answer was released on ECM in 2013.

AARON GOLDBERG LIVE AT THE EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL Aaron Goldberg (piano) Joe Sanders (bass) Eric Harland (drums) After graduating from Harvard in 1996, he performed as a sideman and is most associated with saxophonist Joshua Redman. In 2005 and 2006, Aaron toured and recorded with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, appearing on Rosenwinkel's album The Remedy: Live at the Village Vanguard. In 2005 he toured South America with Madeleine Peyroux and spent 6 months performing with the Wynton Marsalis quartet as well as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Goldberg's debut album as a leader was Turning Point. His most recent release is Home, which continues his long-standing musical partnership with bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. In 2004, Goldberg organized Jazz for America's Future, an historic fundraising concert for Sen. John Kerry; in 2008 and 2012 he organized Jazz For Obama, similar fundraising efforts for President Obama.

Wayne Shorter (saxophone), Danilo Perez (piano), John Patitucci (Doublebass), Brian Blade (drums) Award winning Grammy Awards, jazz icon Wayne Shorter comes to Stockholm Jazz Festival with his acclaimed quartet. Shorter is one of the most influential musicians of Modern Jazz. Since the 1950s, he was a dominant musical force, known as one of the improvisers and the world's most important composers. He played in virtually all with the greatest of Art Blakey to Miles Davis for jazz fusion group Weather Report, and has published more than 20 albums under his own name. With his quartet, Shorter changes the rules by his egalitarian operation and wins with youthful insolence as one of the most exciting groups of the early twenty-first century.

Bokanté Malika Tirolien, voice Michael League, guitar & voice Chris McQueen, guitar & voice Bob Lanzetti, guitar Roosevelt Collier, steel guitar Jamey Haddad, percussion Keita Ogawa, percussion André Ferrari, percussion An experiment conceived by Snarky Puppy founder and GroundUP Music creator Michael League (who has traded his bass in for a baritone guitar in this group), the process of formation was all but conventional. The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.'
