The Sound of New York, Vicente Archer 'The Sound of New York' is the exploration of the musical world of a new generation of artists based in New York City. These musicians hail from different countries, with their own stories and diverse experiences, are giving birth to a new musical wave that takes shape influencing worldwide the artistic scene. It's right in New York today that this impulse is stronger than ever: the sounds come from a deep integration of music of the past and today, interacting with other artistic forms. It's a modern concentration of African-American music influences, including classical and contemporary, as well as more mainstream styles such as Jazz, Hip-Hop, R'B, Rock, etc 10 musicians internationally known will lead us into this world walking along the streets of New York. We will see the places where they live and listen to the music they compose to know their artistic essence. Vicente Archer is an american bassist. Born and raised in Woodstock, NY, Vicente Archer has been hailed as one of the most sought-out bassists of his generation. At the age of twenty, while still in college in Boston, he was picked up by acclaimed artists Donald Harrison and Eric Reed to tour. Soon after that he went on to work with artists such as Terence Blanchard, Kenny Garrett, Wynton Marsalis, Stanley Jordan, Stefon Harris and many more. Vicente currently tours with Blue Note recording artists Amos Lee and Robert Glasper, as well as the Grammy Award winning artist Nicholas Payton. Recorded in 2017 TV director, Gloria Rebecchi

Lady Quartet Rhoda Scott (organ), Airelle Besson (trumpet), Lisa Cat-Berro (saxophone alto), Géraldine Laurent (saxophone alto) Sophie Alour (Saxophone tenor) Julie Saury (drums) Special guest Bernard Purdie (drums) Since 2004, the organist Rhoda Scott has been at the helm (sparked by an idea from Jazz à Vienne) of the torrid and well-named Lady Quartet, in the company of her Amazons Lisa Cat-Berro, Julie Saury and Sophie Alour. As euphoric and punchy as her young companions in the heat of the action, Rhoda Scott is one of the few still to use the pedals on her Hammond organ. Hence her nickname, 'the barefoot organist' (or 'the absolute toe' in the words of Luigi Trussardi!). After helping to raise the temperature in French jazz venues for the past 50 years, Lady Scott will be celebrating her eightieth birthday this year. She'll be blowing out the boogie candles and setting the gospel cake and soulful chorus on fire. The organist is the daughter of a travelling pastor from New Jersey and grew up in religious communities. She graduated with a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and set off for France to complete her studies with Nadia Boulanger. Back in New York, she began by playing with Count Basie. But then she decided to try her luck in Paris, where she arrived right in the month of May 1968. Featuring original compositions and covers ranging from Trenet to Wayne Shorter, 'We Free Queens' (2017), with the title proudly adapted from 'We Free Kings' by Roland Kirk, was recorded live. For Vienne a Lady All-Stars is billed, with Airelle Besson (trumpet), Géraldine Laurent (tenor saxophone) and Anne Pacéo (drums), plus the drummer Bernard Purdie. His style is directly & indirectly influenced by B.Powell, O.Peterson, McCoy Tyner, P.Bley, H.Hancock. 'The biggest lesson I received from Gerry Weil in Venezuela, was to keep my mind open to all types of music' (L.Perdomo) He has played with R.Irizarry and Timbalaye, Ray Barretto's sextet, D. Sanchez, J.Patitucci, D.Douglas, B.Lynch, T.Harrell, D.Gilmore and D.Weiss & 'The Cookers'... He has been a long-standing member of Miguel Zenon's quartet & was a member of Ravi Coltrane's quartet for 10 years. Mimi Jones (Miriam Sullivant) is an American bassist, vocalist, composer, bandleader, education & founder of Hot Tone Music (lin 2009) & now filmaker.Born in NY city, she was raised in the Bronx. She attended The harlem School of the Arts, Fiorello H.LaGuardia Hight School and graduated with a Bachelor of Music Performance from the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory, NY.Her vastwork as a sidewoman includes Gigs with L.Hampton, R.Coltrane, R.Hargrove and L.Perdomo. Golden Striker Trio Ronald L. Carter (bass guitar ) Russel L. Malone (guitar) Donald Vega (piano) A hugely talented double bassist, gifted with a remarkable sense of melody and widely recognised for the finesse and elegance of his playing style, the American Ron Carter is a living legend. A musician of genius, he started out playing with Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Eric Dolphy and Bobby Timmons. He then went on to win fame alongside Cannonball Adderley and Thelonious Monk and, of course, from 1963 to 1968, in the famous quintet formed by Miles Davis. Closer to us in time, Ron Carter became a respected musical leader in his own right in the Golden Striker Trio with Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller ('Golden Striker' album, 2003) and opted, like Ray Brown towards the end of his life, for the legendary trio of piano/guitar/bass, first used by Nat King Cole and Art Tatum. This classical tradition is fully assumed by Miles' former bassist. In concert, the emotion often reaches a climax with one of his favourite songs, the standard 'My Funny Valentine'. A native of Michigan (born in 1937), Ron Carter won a Grammy Award in 1998 for the instrumental 'Call Sheet Blues' from the soundtrack of the film 'Round Midnight'. In 2010, he was made a Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters in France. Last year, his virtuoso association with the accordionist Richard Galliano enjoyed great success in France. A musical sense forged with tungsten, like the strings on his bass, and with all his elegance and freshness intact, the legend is back. The Sound of New York, Gerald Clayton 'The Sound of New York' is the exploration of the musical world of a new generation of artists based in New York City. These musicians hail from different countries, with their own stories and diverse experiences, are giving birth to a new musical wave that takes shape influencing worldwide the artistic scene. It's right in New York today that this impulse is stronger than ever: the sounds come from a deep integration of music of the past and today, interacting with other artistic forms. It's a modern concentration of African-American music influences, including classical and contemporary, as well as more mainstream styles such as Jazz, Hip-Hop, R'B, Rock, etc 10 musicians internationally known will lead us into this world walking along the streets of New York. We will see the places where they live and listen to the music they compose to know their artistic essence. Gerald William Clayton is a jazz pianist and composer born in Utrecht, Netherlands and raised in Los Angeles. Clayton attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, USC's Thornton School of Music, where he studied piano with Billy Childs, and the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Kenny Barron. He has performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove, Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stephens, Kendrick Scott, Ben Williams, Terell Stafford & Dick Oatts, Michael Rodriguez, Avishai Cohen, Sachal Vasandani, Gretchen Parlato, and the Clayton Brothers Quintet. Clayton also has enjoyed an extended association since early 2013, touring and recording with saxophone legend, Charles Lloyd. 2016 marks his second year as Musical Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour, a project that features his trio with Ravi Coltrane, Nicolas Payton, and Raul Midón. Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas are two one-of-a-kind world-class saxophonist and trumpeter. Bokanté Malika Tirolien, voice Michael League, guitar & voice Chris McQueen, guitar & voice Bob Lanzetti, guitar Roosevelt Collier, steel guitar Jamey Haddad, percussion Keita Ogawa, percussion André Ferrari, percussion An experiment conceived by Snarky Puppy founder and GroundUP Music creator Michael League (who has traded his bass in for a baritone guitar in this group), the process of formation was all but conventional. The music and some of the melodies were written by League, demoed while on tour with other bands, and then sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael. Many of the musicians had never even met until the first day of recording. By the end of the week-long session in upstate New York's legendary Dreamland Studios, the band felt abnormally cohesive. 'Unity was paramount in the formation of this group,' observed League. 'Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.' Critics have praised his 'controlled fury' and 'microscopically complex beats.' Born in West Covina, California, he studied with drummer Billy Higgins. Reid was a 1998 recipient of NEC's Alan Dawson Scholarship and in 1999 was accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California. Reid has also attended The New School in New York City. He has performed with Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard, Robert Glasper, Cassandra Wilson, Bruce Hornsby, Jacky Terrasson, Ravi Coltrane, Angélique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves, Mark Turner ... and many others.
